Southern Men’s League-Div4E-Norman Park, Bromley-6/6/09

Once again Invicta travelled to a SML match with only a trio of athletes but, as in previous fixtures, those willing and able to support the team had an enjoyable afternoon. Our lone representative on the track was Peter Bowell who is obviously recovering from his injury as demonstrated by his 3rd in the A 1500 mtrs (5-35.1) and 2nd in the 5k steeplechase (19-42.6). Well done Peter. Callum Barling-Jeffery (U20) competed in his 1st SML match with distinction winning the A string in his speciality event-the HJ (1.60m) before partnering John Gilbert in 3 throwing events where his considerable potential as a decathlete was evident. In the B strings he finished 3rd in both the Javelin (23-57mtrs) and Shot (7.56mtrs) and 4th in the Hammer (8.66mtrs). Callum has the commitment, dedication and ability to do very well in athletics and hopefully more juniors (and youths) like hims will take the opportunity which the Men’s team provides for extra challenging competition. John Gilbert had one of those rare, but very satisfying, days when everything went well and he achieved 6 seasons’ bests among the 7 events he contested. In the A strings he finished 2nd in the Hammer (28.35m) and Discus (24.15m) and 3rd in both the Shot (8.00m) and Javelin (27.09m). Also in the A strings he managed 4th in the LJ (3.08m) and 5th in the TJ (6.06m) before collecting extra points in the B HJ (1.00m). Invicta is obviously not the only club struggling to field teams in the Men’s League as the non-appearance of 2 clubs at this match confirmed. But with only 3 people we beat another team which was there and finished 4th among the 7 clubs in the division!!! Just think, with more people……………….. But you’ve heard it all before!!! Our next match is at Ashford THIS SATURDAY 11th July when we are joint hosts of a double fixture with Ashford AC. It would be SO nice to have lots of Invicta athletes turning out for what is essentially our home match. The “signing-up” sheet is in the club house on the notice board-where it always is. Do please use it. I will be up there on Thursday so do talk to me etc. John Gilbert-team manager-01842 862520-johnandclairegilbert@hotmail.com

SCVAC-Kent Division-Norman Park, Bromley-12/6/09

As you were!! Just Trevor Edgley and John Gilbert turned out for the 3rd fixture of the Kent Vets League-and still we didn`t finish last- coming 6th of the 7 teams in Div 2!!! Trevor contested the 50+ 800m and among competitors younger than himself and at a distance which he regards as a “sprint” he did well to finish 6th (2.45.5). He then moved to the LJ where, again in the 50+, he finished 4th (2.98m). To complete the evening in the 60+ events he tried the discus for the 1st time in his life and achieved.12.28m, a very promising debut, and the 100mtrs finishing a creditable 3rd (16.1). John Gilbert won the 60+ discus (31.51m) and scored a few points in the 35+ LJ (2.95m) (John Gilbert)
