SCVAC - Kent Division-Canterbury-18/5/09

What a difference home advantage made for this match. After berating his fellow vets for not supporting the team in their previous fixture at Sutcliffe Park, this time round team manager, John Gilbert, actually had to select who should compete in some events from among the many candidates offering their services!! And we were also able to field a women's team. Well done to everyone who made themselves available on the night-athletes, officials and other helpers. It was so pleasing to see us do the club proud both on the track and in our organisation and management of the event. In the women's match it was 1st place in all events contested. In the 35+ category Vicky Talbot-Rosner won both the A 400m (75.6sec) and the B 3,000m (12-05.7) while in the same age group Sue Cooper was victorious in the B 400m (76.3) as was Sharon Hawkins in the A 3,000m (11-26.8) Although our women were not represented in the other 7 events on the night, the efforts of Vicky, Sue and Sharon enable Invicta to finish 3rd equal among the 6 competing clubs. Just imagine what we could do with a full squad!! The men were able to contest most events and finished 2nd of 7 clubs in div2. In the 400m 35+ Ian Johns came 5th in the A string (68.2) while David Weston was 2nd in the B competition (66.8). In the 50+ race at this distance Richard Hudson recorded 74.3. A late decision saw Tim Kerr contest the 35+ 2,000m walk which he won very comfortably (12-10.0). When questioned afterwards by his team manager regarding this apparent latent talent, Tim revealed he had actually won a county championship in this event when he was a few years younger. 2nd place finishes were achieved through Martin Kelk in the 35+ A string 3,000m (10-01.9) and Tim Sutton in the B race (10-27.2) while Trevor Edgeley was 4th in the 50+ at the same distance (11-10.4). In the field Terry Hawkins finished 3rd in the 35+ PV (1.60m) and TJ (9.17m). In the 35+ hammer Ralph Noel came 3rd (13.17m), an excellent performance as he only tried the event for the 1st time 4 days earlier, and John Gilbert won the 50+ (29.58m)...John also contested the 50+ TJ (5.69m). In the non-scoring events, Ralph Noel timed 88.9secs in the 35+ 400m while in the same age group 3,000m Peter Bowell showed he is recovering from his injury by placing 3rd (11-35.8) with Tim Kerr 4th in 12.30.4 Now, Invicta Vets : there are still 4 matches in this League - the next at Norman Park (Bromley) THIS FRIDAY-12/6.
