SE Inter Counties Abingdon - Sat 26 May

Bobby close to 19 year-old record in blistering temperatures

Bobby Clay put in another great performance on the 26th May. Despite being only a 1st year u17, Bobby Clay was selected to represent Kent in this year's u20 Regional match in the 800m at Abingdon

Peculiar weather of tropical sun and a blustery head wind on the back straight affected all performers.  Under a blistering sun at 11 am, Bobby made sure to qualify for the final by winning Heat 1 strongly against rivals up to 4 years older - her 2mins 15 was 3 seconds faster than all competitors who qualified for the final.

Planning to stick to her strategy of running even faster in the final, Bobby rested out of the sun until a few minutes before 6pm when she emerged for the final which was run in an energy sapping 28 degrees. Rivals who had hoped for a tactical slow lap with a frantic sprint at the end were disappointed as Bobby set out strongly, challenging more experienced women to go with the early pace and, unchallenged, Bobby won by over 20 metres in 2mins 10.69 which was only 3 tenths short of the u20 record set in 1993.

Bobby thus heads IEK's 2012 rankings and her winning time at Abingdon is the 2nd fastest ever by an IEK female - the fastest is her own IEK Female record 2:08.75 set last year when winning the National u15 title in Bedford.
