Having won promotion to Div 1 last year it was a small but determined Men’s Team who travelled to Sutcliffe Park and competed well in the 1st fixture of this season. In the 35+ “B” events Stephen Burt placed 3rd in both the 400m (60.8) and the 3K (11-11.5). In the same age group “A” strings Martin Kelk finished 5th in the 3K (10-31.0) and TJ (6-95). In the 50+ category Rob Whittaker managed 2nd in the 400m (62.3) and 3rd in the 3K (10-51.3) before volunteering for the 35+ Ham where he was 6th with a promising 9-96!!

Ian Tomlinson is a recent newcomer to the club. He competed at junior international level in the LJ, TJ and HJ before a career in teaching put his athletics “on hold” for the past 30 years!! And in the 50+ TJ in his 1st competition since his teens how did Ian get on? He won (10.81)!! Welcome to the team Ian. Team manager John Gilbert placed 3rd in the 50+ Ham (25-97) and then in the cause of team spirit and collective effort and crowd entertainment negotiated the 60+ 400m (103.1) and TJ (5-94)!!

Given that we forfeited lots of points not contesting the PV and Walks we did well to place 5th among the 6 competing teams. Unfortunately none of our Women vets were able to make the match.

Our 2nd fixture is at our own Canterbury home track on Mon 20th May commencing at 6-45. We need as many people as possible to be there-competitors, officials and helpers. Being “at home” should give us a big advantage-let`s make sure we take it!!

Yours in Sport- John Gilbert
