SCVAC-Kent League-Medway Park, Gillingham-21/06/2013-Men-Div 1

Four Invicta men contested most of the events in this match before ever dependable Martin Kelk was able to arrive from a late work commitment and contribute to the 4x400m relay (6th-4-29.7).Stephen Burt (M45) placed 5th in both the “A” 200m (27.3) and 1500m (44-58.4) and also ran in the relay. Rob Whittaker (M50) contested the 35+ 200m (6th-29.3) and his own age group 1500m where he finished a very creditable 2nd (5-06.6). Rob then showed his versatility in the 50+ HJ placing 5th (1-25) before joining the other 3 Invicta “musketeers” in the relay. As on many previous occasions Richard Hudson (M55) was “here, there and everywhere” finishing 6th in both the 35+”B” 1500m (6-28.1) and 35+ SP (3-58); 4th in the 50+ 200m (31.4) and making up our relay quartet.

Invicta had been allocated responsibility for officiating the men's and women`s Javelin so John Gilbert (M65) spent most of the evening pre-occupied with this so that his team-mates could concentrate on their events. He managed to squeeze in a throw in the 50+ Shot for 5th place (7.94) and in the 60+ Jav finished 2nd (26-56).

The fact that our numbers were so sparse meant that we were unable to contest quite a few events (despite the heroics of Rob and Richard in particular). This contributed to our 6th place finish in this match but our aggregate match points for the season (so far) still finds us in 5th overall.

We cannot now realistically move higher than this even though 2 matches remain-5th July at Ashford and 15th July at Dartford. But it would be so encouraging to have a strong turn-out for these matches (particularly the “local” one at Julie Rose) to demonstrate how competitive we can be as a club IF the many Vets at Invicta are there on the night. It would also be especially pleasing to see some of our women at these matches-otherwise there would seem to be little point in entering a women`s team in the League next season.

The “sign-up” sheets and match details are on the notice board and listed below.

PS-This report is based on the official results from the match. I appreciate that we may possibly have made late amendments to the declaration of which I am not aware. If names are wrong-sorry! You know what you did and can correct any errors on Power-of 10 yourselves. Thanks.

Yours in Sport-John Gilbert
