Kent Young Athletes League - Match 3 Report, July 3rd

Invicta’s Under 13 & U15 athletes were back on the track again for the 3rd round of the Kent Young Athletics League and once again they did not disappoint! Again, we finished in a superb 2nd place with both the under 15 boys finishing in overall 2nd place, and U13 girls finishing first!

Once again, we saw some excellent individual performances to add to the team success. Isabelle Harding (U13, Stuart Earl) started us off with the 70m hurdles. Again, she proved her strength as a hurdler, finishing in 1st place with a time of 12.1s, a whole second ahead of the 2nd place in the race. Later, she took on the 150m and dominated the field. She won that too with a time of 21.7 (4s faster than her previous attempt at this distance!). Issy also took on the shot putt; throwing 6.61m to take her to 2nd place.

Jildou Chappell once again showed great strength in her 1200m, finishing in 2nd place with a time of 4:12.2. She later took on the javelin, winning the B string with a throw of 11.97m.

Among the boys, Henry-James Finch started us off the 100m. In a very close race, he finished 4th with a time of 15.7s. We later saw him storm round the bend in the 200, finishing in 1st place with a time of 31.2.

Meanwhile, Jack Herbert (Tony Piersall) took on the high jump, soaring over the bar in first place with a jump of 1.15m (equal to his PB). Keeping up this form, Jack later won the long jump with a jump of 3.69m. He then took to the throws and finished in 2nd place in the B string for the javelin with a throw of 12.85m. An excellent day all-round for Jack!

Danny Wake-Smith (Tony) was also a big contender in the field events. He finished 4th in the B string of the long jump with a jump of 2.92m. His first attempt at the long jump and a good one to start with! He then showed his strength in the shot putt, finishing in 3rd place with a throw of 4.47m. He then throw a great 15.75m to finish in 3rd place in the javelin.

Representing the under 15s, Luke Mellor (Tony Piersall), finished in 5th place in the 100m with a new PB of 13.8s. Luke then took on the shot putt, finishing in 2nd place with a throw of 8.60m, bagging himself ANOTHER new PB! Luke also continued with his high jump winning streak, winning the A string with a jump of 1.50m, equalling his PB achieved at the last KYAL match.

In the same event, Inigo Warren (Tony Piersall) finished a close 2nd place (winning the B string) with a jump of 1.45m. Again, equalling his PB from the previous KYAL. Excellent consistency from these two young multi eventers! Inigo maintained his record as a great jumper by coming 2nd in the long jump with a jump of 4.85m. A new PB! Finally, he took to the hurdles and despite being the only one in the race he clocked 14.4s which has given him an excellent PB to work with for the season. Sebastian Ngassa bagged himself a new PB for the season throwing 12.75 to finish in 5th place in the discus.

Over to the middle distance runners, and training partners, Oscar Parrick & Charlie Brisley (Peter Mullervy) went head to head in the 1500m. Both looked strong, forming a break-away group with another runner from Thanet early on. Charlie kept with the Thanet runner, pulling away from him in the final lap. With a superb sprint finish, Charlie finished in 1st place with a time of 4:25.6 (only 2s off his personal best). Oscar followed shortly behind in 3rd place 4:41.0, also not far off his personal best.

Over to the girls and Issie Martin (Peter Mullervy) represented Invicta in the 1500m. She finished in 4th place with a time of 5:50.1. Issie also gave the discus a go, winning the B string with a throw of 10.33m; a new PB and event to add to her list.

Representing the sprinters, dynamnic duo Djamilla Nkereuwem & Hannah Scrivens (Carlo Monticolombi) took on the 100. Djamilla came 2nd in the A string with a strong 14.0s. Hannah ran in the B string along with training partner Mary Curry. They finished 1st & 2nd respectively. Hannah clocked an excellent time of 13.8s, only .2s off her recent PB, while Mary managed 15s ; not far off her PB and with good form, she looks set to beat that time next race.

The girls then went their separate ways to take on a field event each. Hannah won the B string of the shot putt with a throw of 5.61, while Djamilla jumped 1.35 in the high jump gaining a 2nd place finish. Mary took on the long jump, finishing in 7th place with a jump of 3.45m; a great jump from someone who doesn’t usually train for the long jump!

Later, Hannah & Djamilla took to the track again for the 300m. Although not their usual distance, the two girls were flying round the track. It was an incredible race to watch. Djamilla pipped another athlete on the line to take 1st place while Hannah got 3rd. Djamilla recorded an excellent 45s; her first official time for the 300m, while Hannah finished in 46.7s (a whole second off her PB!).

Lauren Macey (Tony) showed off her excellent hurdling skills once again and bagged 2nd place in the 75m hurdles with a time of 13.0s (a new personal best!). Lauren later took on the shot putt; throwing 5.64 to finish 5th in the A string. She also took on the high jump, competing in the B string, finishing in 2nd place with a jump of 1.30m, equalling her personal best.

After a day full of individual successes, we had just enough time for one more thing; the relays. The girls performed amazingly in the 4x100m relay. In the U13s, Issy Harding once again got a great start to enable the Medway Phoenix Park girls’ to push through and finish in 1st place, while Carlo’s terrific trio teamed with another Medway Phoenix Park athlete in the U15 race. Mary, Hannah & Djamilla all had an excellent race with Djamilla bringing the baton home well clear in first place!

Well done everyone on such a fantastic day. With one match to go, let’s hope we can retain 2nd place for the overall league!
