SML-Div 4E-10/7/10-Dartford

Can this really be happening? IEK team wins for a SECOND time in the SML!! What`s going right? Lots of people turning out to support the team, that`s what!! Well done to all our competitors who did themselves proud. Now....our final match of the season is at Luton on 31/7. Please be there. But to our heroes on the day who were “hot, hot, hot” and “scorched” to victory in 35 deg temperatures. Let’s start with Martin Kelk (v40) who in the B strings won the 1500m (4:45.9) was 2nd in the 400m (60.6), 3rd in the A LJ (4.76m) and 5th in the TJ (7.59m), ran in the relays and then had the commitment (or was it the effects of sunstroke?) to volunteer for the B 3,000m S/ch which he won in 11:44.1! Martin is one of those quiet but immensely determined and strong willed persons who are invaluable team members. From the same mould are the Rogers brothers, Paul and Lee. When they realized there were events on the programme which we needed to fill to collect all the points we could, they didn`t wait to be asked by the team manager if they would do them-they put their names down or simply went and did them! To illustrate - in the B events, Paul was 3rd in LJ (4.48m), 5th in HJ (1.00m), 3rd in both 200m (28.4) and 100m (13.3) and won the 400m hdls (71.0). In the A string he was 3rd in the 110m hdls (21.1). And then......of course...both relays-4x100m-3rd (55.8) and 4x400m-3rd (time unknown). In the B competitions, Lee won the 110m hdls (21.9) was 5th in the TJ-(5.16m) 3rd in the 5,000m (24:8.02). In the A strings he was 3rd in the 400m hdls (69.4) 4th in 200m (27.4) and 6th in HJ (1.00m). And “yes”...you are right...both relays!! The brothers even considered trying PV for the first time and secured offers from other competitors for use of their poles. They eventually decided against it, mainly because of concern that they might damage the borrowed poles rather than worries about their own safety! Daniel Langridge (u20) secured 4th in the A 100m (13.0) 3rd in the B 800m (2:35.1) as well as contributing to the relays. Chris Holmes made a stunning return to the team after limited appearances in recent years whilst he has been at University. He won the A string 800m by 16 secs (2:06.3), the 1500m by 7secs (4:33.7)the 3,000m S/ch by nearly two minutes (10:42.0) while in the 400m he was 3rd (57.6). Plus..Inevitably..The relays! Another welcome returnee Nick Little was 3rd in A 5,000m (18:45.7) and ran in both relays. The presence of another u20, Aaron Murray, in the throws, after unavoidably missing matches because of work commitments, meant he and John Gilbert were able to score high and support the hard work of team mates. Aaron won the A shot (11.99m), was 3rd in both Discus (27.70m) and Jav (29.15m) and won the B Hammer(24.57m). John won the A Hammer (26.24m) and, in the B strings was first in Discus (21.88m) and 2nd in both Shot (7.65m) and Jav (25.55m) Remember-we need a final BIG EFFORT at Luton.
