Rhiannon Kent Pentathlon champion 2010

Rhiannon Wallwork - Kent Schools 2010Rhiannon Wallwork stormed to Kent Gold in the u-13 county pentathlon championships at Tonbridge, posting 4 personal bests out of the 5 events and totalling 2123 points, just 63 short of Anna Alvarez's club record of 2186 in 2008.
Rhiannon was 2nd in both the opening and closing events (hurdles and 800m) was significantly better than all 8 rivals in both long jump and shot and was equal best in the high jump with her Ashford rival. The Ashford girl's win at 800m gained 59 more points than Rhiannon's 2nd, taking her from bronze to silver, Rhiannon clinching gold by 363 points.
Rhiannon's personal bests : 13.06 (70m hdles) 8.31m (shot) 1.31m (high jump) and 2mins 52.09 for 800m.

IEK at Julie Rose Memorial Open

Seven young IEK athletes raced in the 2010 Julie Rose Open at the Ashford stadium built and named in her honour in 1997 following her death in a plane crash 25 years ago.
In the 600m, Alistair Noel (u17) tested his speed in 1min 37.1, while 9 year-old Douglas Noel and 8 year-old Oliver Weston raced each other in 2:06 and 2:16 respectively.
Jacob Burton recorded 4.42.38 in race 3 of 1,500m, while Anna Weston (u13) ploughed a lonely furrow in race 2 in 5:20 between adults either 30 secs faster or 60 secs slower.
In the sprints, Ben Burton (u-17) and IEK newcomer Joe Hawkins (u15) raced each other at both 100m and 200m : in race 6 of 100m, they notched an IEK 1-2, recording 12.29 and 12.40, while in race 4 Rhiannon Wallwork (u-13) was 2nd in 14.06
In race 4 of the 200m, Ben again got the better of Joe, this time Ben's twin brother Jacob finished between them, all three within 2 10ths of a second of each other.

IEK at Regional Intercounties

At the Southern Intercounty match for 13 counties at Copthall (Hendon) Anna Alvarez (ranked 6 in UK Shot Put) competed in two events within 15 minutes - first her opening throw of 11.28m got her 2nd in Shot to a Berkshire girl ranked 3rd : within 15 minutes, Anna was 5th in Javelin with her 2nd round throw of 28.29m
SEAA 2010 - Int-Co Hendon (Aug) - Bobby Clay
On the track, 1st year u-15 Bobby Clay fearlessly challenged the UK No.2 from Essex and UK No. 7 from Bedfordshire in a tactical 800m final and was only 3 seconds adrift after the two older girls suddenly changed gear down the back straight.
Bobby is ranked 43 in UK with a best of 2.20 which, this season, her two rivals have bettered 8-9 times each. The picture shows her in heats (No.10 in blue Kent colours) shadowing UK no. 2 Kaylee Dodd (7) in red Essex vest
Jaffer Adams (11.78) was 8th in the final of u15 Boys 100m where he too was up against a UK No. 2 from Essex who, surprisingly, was beaten by the UK No.8 from Surrey.

Anna Alvarez silver in Nationals - 5 IEK compete at Bedford

In round 2 of the National u-15 Shot Put at Bedford, Anna Alvarez stepped into the circle 5th, lofted the 3.25kg shot 12.09m to overtake all but the eventual champion, Annabel Sherry (Cheltenham Harriers) to take silver with her 4th IEK Shot record this season.
In winning the Kent title in May, Anna was 3 cm short of the club record set in 1995 by IEK's legendary multi-eventer Liz Gibbens. By the end of June, Anna had twice betterd Liz's 10.42m and in early July finished 6th in the English Schools (Birmingham) with 10.70m.
In late July, Anna made club history with the first IEK throw over 11 metres at our own IEK Open : at Bedford she went one better with the first 12 metre throw.
Jaffer Adams (u-15) ran 11.81 into a headwind for 7th in the semi-final of Saturday's 100m - the following day, Jaffer was edged out in the heats of 200m despite a near best 23.63
In the u-17s, Jake Rogers & Kieran Reilly tackled 1500m on Day 1, while Rebecca Weston did 800m on Day 2. Jake (4.25.75) wasn't in the right frame of mind in his heat, while Kieran (4.10.89) was a comfortable qualifier for a tactical final where he was a fine 6th, albeit 2 seconds slower in 4.12.66
Rebecca Weston (2.16.13) was unlucky to be edged out of the 800m final by 2/10ths after being boxed and buffeted in her heat where the 1st 5 were all within one second.

IEK Open Meeting

Jaffer Grade 1 sprint - Max improves Javelin record

In June, Max Farnell was first IEK u-13 boy to throw javelin over 30 metres when taking silver at the Prep Schools National Finals - at our August Open Meeting, Thanet AC's James Mileham won with 32.28m (Grade 1) and Max was 2nd with 31.44m (Grade 2) improving his own club record by almost 1 metre.
It was 1-1 between Jaffer Adams and u-15 IEK newcomer Joe Hawkins : Jaffer recorded Grade 1 at 100m ahead of Joe's Grade 3 in 100m - both recorded Grade 3 times when Joe won 400m by some 5 metres with Jaffer breaking 60 secs for the first time. Joe then went on to do Grade 2 in Long Jump with 5.58m, the longest leap of 15 competitors and only 2 cm short of Jaffer's best this season.
Rhiannon Wallwork's 100m + Long Jump were both superb u-13 Grade 2 but she had to give way to one Thanet Anderson twin in 100m and to the other twin in Long Jump.
Red Sparrows (Bobby Clay, Lilly Coward and Anna Weston) dominated Race 2 of 1,000m while u-17 pair Jake Rogers and Chris Thomas gave u-17 Kent 800m champion Kieran Reilly a good run for his money in Race 3.
Two competitors recorded National Grade times in 3,000m - Rebecca Weston (u-17) stayed all the way with u-20 Jamie Bailey and was only 50m adrift at the end in a Grade 2 time. Beth Burnett was 6th overall in an u-17 Grade 4 time, close to her best.
Lilly Coward (u-15) earned the Golden Trainer for performance of the day with her competitive 2nd place in 300m sprint only 3-4 minutes after a scintillating finish at 1,000m

Track racing 2010

Kieran breaks his own IEK 800m record at Watford Open

Five u-17 IEK athletes contested 800m in 22 races at the Watford Open on 11 August, the only female among them Beth Burnett was 11th in Race 3 in 2min 43.36.
Jake Rogers (2.04.37) Ben Burton (2.04.59) and Jacob Burton (2.11.01) were 8th, 9th and 11th in Race 18.
Kieran Reilly - Kent 800m Champion 2010Performance of the evening came from Kieran Reilly, Kent 800m champion 2010 and also holder of IEK u-17 record for this distance.
Pictured LEFT in the heats of the Kent championships in May, Kieran resisted the urge to declare too fast a target time at Watford and was among 12 competitors in Race 19 : in a supremely competitive race where less than 3 seconds separated the first 10 athletes, Kieran was 3rd in 1.58.34 shaving 4/10ths of a second off his own u-17 IEK club record, set at an earlier Open at the same venue.

Track & Field Leagues 2010

8 IEK do 16 League events - another IEK sprint relay record by u13 girls

In the under-13 section of the Kent League for u-13 & u-15, Annabel Knight was 2nd in both 75m and 150m, and Poppy Collins showed her endurance qualities when winning the B race at 150m after coming 3rd in the short sprint.
Anna Weston (ranked in UK top 40 at 1500m) was too strong for the rest in the less frequently raced 1,000m, cruising home 50 metres clear of the field.
Rhiannon Wallwork (A) and Lydia Gallyer Barnett (B) each won Long Jump and Shot Put, then each won their 3rd event - Lydia was a comfortable winner of the discus with 15.34m and Rhiannon's winning time of 1min 53.4 secs for 600m takes her to 70th in UK, almost the same as her 100m ranking of 66th in the country.
At Ashford a month ago Poppy, Annabel and Rhiannon were 3 of the 4 who had set the u-13 4x100m relay record : this time they combined with Lydia to win at Bromley, shaving another 2/10ths of a second off the record.
In the under-15 section, Bobby Clay (A) and Lilly Coward (B) were easy winners at 800m, while Amy Old impressed after a long lay-off with a win in the A string 1500m - Lilly did some useful speed work, comfortably winning the 300m sprint, improving her time by over 2 seconds.

Southern InterCounties Match - Stevenage

Four IEK represent Kent in u-17 Regional Inter-County match

Sam Hudson improved his 1,500m steeplechase best by almost 4 seconds when finishing 6th A string in 5mins 08.4 at Stevenage.
Twin brothers Ben and Jacob Burton again showed their Decathlon potential, each representing the county in 3 events : both were 6th in A & B Triple Jump where each posted over 11 metres - both contested 400m hurdles where Ben (up against UK No. 2 Sean Adams from Southampton) posted a time to put him in the country's top 50, while Jacob's 62.1 in the B race puts him in the top 150. To round off a busy afternoon, Jacob was 4th in 400m (B) and Ben 5th in 800m (B).
Kieran Reilly crossed the line 3rd in a tactical 1,500m to win the B race and then went on to 5th in 800m (A) where he posted his 3rd consecutive sub-2 minute time.
Beth Burnett was 3rd Kent finisher in the 3,000m and finished 11th in 12mins 58.9

Southern Men’s League Match 5 Luton - 31 July

All hinged on the last match of the season. IEK were lying third behind Luton and Biggleswade despite having won 2 of the previous 4 matches. Could we do enough to gain second place and automatic promotion?
At the beginning of the afternoon we had 8 names on our list and had filled A and B strings in every event except pole vault. Unfortunately Lee Rogers took a fall in the 400mH and was unable to complete all his events and another athlete failed to turn up. However, other athletes stepped up to the mark so only the B string of the 110mH, the javelin and the 5000m and the 4 x 100m relay were not covered.
After an exciting and busy afternoon the final scores were; Biggleswade 218, Luton 193.5 and IEK 161.5. So we finish 3rd in the league but can still feel proud of our efforts.
As team manager for the day I would like to thank the athletes who competed and Hannah, Carol and Simon for their help in judging.
Report by:- Gilien Davison
Busiest IEK Senior on the day was Lee Rogers (9 individual events) - Vet David Glendower did 5 events, adding High Jump to all 4 throws - brothers Ben and Jacob Burton (u-17) did 3 individual events each

SOUTHERN MENS LEAGUE - POSSIBLE PROMOTION UPDATE

Hi John - I got your message - attached are results and league table Don sent out.
Looks close even though you are in 3rd spot- could be done to get into the top 2.
You might be in line for promotion anyway as there may be more teams come down or drop out from the League- so more than 2 might go up. Some teams have not turned out and covered the requisite number of events so theoretically should be automatically relegated, or one team looks as though its A team will drop out of Div 2 into 3 which will automaticaly push its B team from 3 into 4.
This all might be academic as it depends on what the working party looking at a regional structure comes up with and whether AGM accepts any recommendations.
There is a very wide range of views on the working party- the london clubs generally not wanting to travel far outside the M25 and the teams at far flung edges not wanting to lose access to good quality competition.
So at this stage I am saying nothing to my team and keeping them totally focussed on the idea they are in line for promotion but everything depends on this last match
Good luck for next saturday- my task this afternoon is to look for a team too. Bedford is in the BAL and has a match next weekend too in that. All the stars are off doing international type things meaning that all the good SML athletes are being press ganged into going to Glasgow which coupled with holidays means I am trawling the U17 results again and looking for vets that haven't been seen yet this year!!! Was it ever thus- a typical team managers weekend!!

IEK Open Meetings 2010

14 Club champions - records by Anna Kieran Donald Jaffer Anna

July Open 2010 - Molly Dawson + CathedralCanterbury Cathedral provides spectacular backdrop for Molly Dawson in the July 2010 IEK Open meeting, the 19th at The Canterbury High School track.
A record 118 entries from clubs as far apart as Chelmsford and Eastbourne provided a buzzing atmosphere in which 5 IEK age group records were broken and no fewer than 14 members emerged as Club Champions - 7 at Long Jump and 7 at 5,000m.
Anna Alvarez not only broke her own u-15 IEK Shot Put record for the 3rd time this season, she finally did in competition what she's done in training - she's now the first u-15 club member to officially break the 11 metre mark : before this Open Anna was ranked 10 in the UK - her 11.21m here puts her up to 7th u-15 in the UK.
Donald Carter made a 'low-key return' to track racing with a Senior Men's record for 2,000m, with Kieran Reilly bettering Andy Cope's 2007 u-17 Men's record for the same distance by 15 seconds.
Anna Weston broke new ground by establishing a new 2,000m mark for u-13 girls which is not only faster than the IEK u-13 boys best by Louis Duprez but is also the 2nd fastest all-time IEK female behind Beth Carter.
Jaffer Adams did a Carl Lewis with a sprint + long jump : in the 100m he equalled Andrew Loveland's 23 year-old club record which puts him equal 25th in this year's u-15 UK rankings - he then became u-15 Club Long Jump champion 2010 with 5.60m (the longest leap of the meeting) which puts him equal 70th in the UK rankings.
July Open 2010 - 5,000m Club Championship

13 year old under-13 relay record blitzed at Ashford

T&F 2010 relays - Poppy C & Annabel K Four under-13 IEK girls brought a memorable curtain down on the Kent YA League match at Ashford when they erased a long-standing club record by the largest margin in a decade of IEK club record breaking.
Pictured are Poppy Collins and Annabel Knight effecting a smooth handover in the 4x100 relay before the baton went to Pippi Randall and then to Rhiannon Wallwork, for them to inflict a rare defeat on a Medway Maidstone sprint relay team - in the process they blitzed the 1997 IEK best by over 1 second.
None of our 4 record breakers who scorched round the Ashford track in 56.7 were even born on the day Julie Attwood, Tammy Foreman Elissa Mayland and Amanda Allerton set their u-13 record of 57.9

Track & Field 2010

SML-Div 4E-10/7/10-Dartford

Can this really be happening? IEK team wins for a SECOND time in the SML!! What`s going right? Lots of people turning out to support the team, that`s what!! Well done to all our competitors who did themselves proud. Now....our final match of the season is at Luton on 31/7. Please be there.
But to our heroes on the day who were “hot, hot, hot” and “scorched” to victory in 35 deg temperatures. Let’s start with Martin Kelk (v40) who in the B strings won the 1500m (4:45.9) was 2nd in the 400m (60.6), 3rd in the A LJ (4.76m) and 5th in the TJ (7.59m), ran in the relays and then had the commitment (or was it the effects of sunstroke?) to volunteer for the B 3,000m S/ch which he won in 11:44.1! Martin is one of those quiet but immensely determined and strong willed persons who are invaluable team members.
From the same mould are the Rogers brothers, Paul and Lee. When they realized there were events on the programme which we needed to fill to collect all the points we could, they didn`t wait to be asked by the team manager if they would do them-they put their names down or simply went and did them! To illustrate - in the B events, Paul was 3rd in LJ (4.48m), 5th in HJ (1.00m), 3rd in both 200m (28.4) and 100m (13.3) and won the 400m hdls (71.0). In the A string he was 3rd in the 110m hdls (21.1). And then......of course...both relays-4x100m-3rd (55.8) and 4x400m-3rd (time unknown).
In the B competitions, Lee won the 110m hdls (21.9) was 5th in the TJ-(5.16m) 3rd in the 5,000m (24:8.02). In the A strings he was 3rd in the 400m hdls (69.4) 4th in 200m (27.4) and 6th in HJ (1.00m). And “yes”...you are right...both relays!! The brothers even considered trying PV for the first time and secured offers from other competitors for use of their poles. They eventually decided against it, mainly because of concern that they might damage the borrowed poles rather than worries about their own safety!
Daniel Langridge (u20) secured 4th in the A 100m (13.0) 3rd in the B 800m (2:35.1) as well as contributing to the relays.
Chris Holmes made a stunning return to the team after limited appearances in recent years whilst he has been at University. He won the A string 800m by 16 secs (2:06.3), the 1500m by 7secs (4:33.7)the 3,000m S/ch by nearly two minutes (10:42.0) while in the 400m he was 3rd (57.6). Plus..Inevitably..The relays! Another welcome returnee Nick Little was 3rd in A 5,000m (18:45.7) and ran in both relays.
The presence of another u20, Aaron Murray, in the throws, after unavoidably missing matches because of work commitments, meant he and John Gilbert were able to score high and support the hard work of team mates. Aaron won the A shot (11.99m), was 3rd in both Discus (27.70m) and Jav (29.15m) and won the B Hammer(24.57m). John won the A Hammer (26.24m) and, in the B strings was first in Discus (21.88m) and 2nd in both Shot (7.65m) and Jav (25.55m)
Remember-we need a final BIG EFFORT at Luton.

ESAA 2010 - Beth Carter (3,000m)
In her 3rd race this season, Beth ran sensibly, even if in lane 3 most of the way, clinching silver right on the line in 9:46.81, making it 3 medals in 3 appearances - as an Intermediate Girl she won bronze (2007) and silver in 2008. In 2009, as a Senior Girl, she was sidelined with persistent injury - her silver this year is in her last year at school before going up to St Mary's College Twickenham in September.
The remaining 4 IEK members at the Aviva English Schools National championships in Birmingham were all selected for the first time.
Anna Alvarez was 6th in Junior Girls Shot Put with 10.70m, only 10 cm short of the u-15 IEK club record she had set just a month ago -
Kieran Reilly had qualified for 3 events at ESAA, including 800m and 1500m but was eventually selected for 3,000m where, in a strong field of 21 rivals, he finished a creditable 9th in 8:53.60, only 1 second short of his best -
Jason Prickett narrowly missed qualifying for the final of Senior Boys 800m despite a Grade 2 time of 1min 55.26 in the heats -
Jaffer Adams was unlucky not to make round 2 of the Junior Boys 200m despite being 3rd in his heat in a Grade 1 time of 24.1, only half a second outside his best.

Max Farnell first IEK over 30m to better 18 year javelin record

Max Farnell - IAPS 2010Max Farnell [LEFT] clinched a fine silver in the javelin at the National Prep Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham where he was the first u-13 IEK member to clear 30 metres, thus breaking the IEK u-13 club record of 29.18m set by Tim Kitney in 1992.
In a competiton of three attempts, and the top 6 having a 4th and final throw, Max twice went over 30 metres : he lay 4th at the end of the opening round, leapt up to 2nd with his best throw of 30.54m and, his 4th and final attempt was only 1 cm short of his round 2 best effort.
Max's new mark is a National Grade 2 standard and by improving his previous Grade 3 personal best by almost 3 meters, he moves up from 47th to 23rd in this season's National Power-of-10 National rankings.
At the same meeting, the benefit of training in Carlo Monticolombi's sprint squad showed when Max improved his 200m time (29.1) to a Grade 3 time of 28.86

National u20 League - 2010

Chris Chancellor dips under 50 seconds to break into top 50

Chris Chancellor - 2010Representing INVICTA's PADDOCK (IEK + Paddock Wood combined U-20 League team) Chris Chancellor [RIGHT] recorded his first sub-50 seconds for 400m when he ran South of England finalist Omari Markland-Montgomery (Cambridge Harriers) to within 2/10 of a second.
Chris is already this season's u-20 IEK club champion at 400m and his 49.8 at Dartford is the fastest 400m by any IEK member for over 20 years - it is less than half a second outside Kevin Ruck's 32 year-old u-20 club mark of 49.4 and it takes him to 46th in this season's UK National u-20 rankings.
Callum Barling Jeffery was 4th in all events contested as A string - Long (5.34m) High (1.60m) Triple (11.20m) - Jacob Burton and Beth Burnett (both A string of the 800m) were also 4th, Jacob with 2.09.9 and Beth with 2.40.5.
Beth recorded 9.40m (B Discus) and 9.50m (B Javelin) where sister Charlotte (A string in both) posted a season's best discus of 17.80m for 4th and then went on to win the B Hammer with 16.01m.

Track racing 2010

Kieran Reilly first IEK u-17 to break 4 minutes for 1500m

Kieran Reilly - Kent Relays 2009Kieran Reilly celebrated his first track call up to the English Schools in Birmingham (where he will contest 3,000m) with a sizzling 1,500m at the Watford Open in 3mins 59.34 secs to shatter Andy Beckwith's 1995 record of 4mins 00.7.
In addition to being this season's Kent 800m champion and Kent Schools 1500m champion, Kieran now holds both IEK u-17 middle-distance records at the traditional distances of 800m and 1,500, as well as the less frequenly raced 600m and 1,000m.
Pictured LEFT at last season's Kent 4x400 Relays, Kieran is not only the first u-17 IEK member to break the 4-minute barrier for 1,500m, he's also the first IEK male of any age to run this fast since the halcyon days in 1995 when Senior Men Harvey Cossell (3:53.7) and Will Grant (3:58.7) were joined by Tim Davis, an u-20 on the day he recorded his best ever of 3:57.4
Kieran's progress in 12 months is noteworthy : his 400m time this season (53.5) is identical to his best in 2009, his 800m time this season (u17 club record of 1:58.79) is 3 seconds faster than his best last year - his new pb for 1500m is a breathtaking 17 seconds faster than his Grade 2 last year, with his 3,000m time an astounding 52 seconds faster than last year

T& F Multi-events - 2010

Ben Burton smashes Michael Adlam's 25 year-old Octathlon record

27 June was a Red-letter day for Ben Burton (RIGHT)Ben Burton - Kent Relays 2009 when he was 2nd Kent man and 6th overall in the Octathlon at the Regional Schools Combined events at Ashford with an new IEK record.
Over the weekend, Ben mustered 5 pbs (shot, javelin, 100 hdles, high jump and Discus) to amass 4162 points (National Grade 2) which smashes by 100 points the u-17 club record set way back in 1985 by Michael Adlam, one of our best ever multi-eventers.
To match Ben's 100point improvement of Adlam's record, an u-17 male runner would have to record 49.9secs to erase the u-17 record of 51.0 for 400m, or, an u-20 female would have to reduce the 800m record of 2min 15.6secs to 2min 13.0 secs.
Ben's Discus pb of 30.15m is a particular revelation because only 4 days earlier he was 3rd in our internal club championships with a best of 19.43m, behind 2010 club champion brother Jacob as well as Sam Hudson.
Ben's Ashford Octathlon puts him in the top 10 of the country's 2010 rankings and he is now selected to represent Kent Schools at the English Schools National Octathlon in September

KENT ROAD RACE UPDATE AFTER BLUEWATER 10K

With the 2010 Kent road race season well under way, IEK have been struggling to get numbers to various races this season. However despite the low turn out, both men and women are holding respectable positions in their leagues.
IEK men are 14th of 29 teams, a long way behind last year, but still time for improvement. Leading the mens competition is once again Tunbridge Wells Harriers.
The women are doing much better than the men this season! IEK women are 6th of 30 teams, led by Maidstone Harriers.
Senior Men: Mark Wilkins is currently 3rd overall, he has raced less than the two runners ahead and when dropped scores count is actually leading the championship, he needs to complete more races though to count towards the season total.
M40s: Tim Sutton (39th) is our best runner with Peter Bowell 65th.
M60s: Martyn Rouse is currently 9th.
Senior Women: Liz Weeks is our best female in 10th overall but with dropped scores would be higher up the league, next is Claire Brown who is 25th. Good to see a few more senior women racing this season!
W45s: Sue Cooper (8th) is first IEK athlete, Vicky Talbot-Rosner close behind in 10th.
As always, it would be good to see more runners taking part in these races!

Southern Men’s League-Match 3-Sat 6th June-Luton - Div 4E

Invicta took a strong team to Luton for the 3rd match of the season and were hoping to repeat their victory achieved at the previous fixture, but encountered stiff opposition from the Luton home club and their local neighbours Biggleswade. The Rogers brothers, Lee and Paul, made another massive contribution to Invicta`s overall points score. In the “A” events Lee contested the 100mtrs-5th-13.5sec; 200mtrs-4th-28sec; 110mtrs hurdles-1st-21.1sec; 4oo mtrs hurdles-3rd-68.8sec; 3k steeplechase-5th-17-21.4 mins. He also did the “B” 800mtrs-1st-2-26.6 mins and both relays. Not to be outdone his older brother Paul was equally busy in the “B” events-100mtrs-4th-14.3sec; 200mtrs-3rd-26.9sec; 110mtrs hurdles-1st 21.2sec; 4oomtrs hurdles-1st-67.1sec; 3k steeplechase-2nd-17-22.4 mins; LJ-3rd-4-66mtrs and the relays!! And they were both smiling at the end of the match saying they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves!!
U17 Joe Marchant ran well in the “A” 400mtrs-3rd-65.2sec and 800mtrs-2nd-2-17.6mins before collecting more valuable points in the “B” 1500mtrs-4th-and the 4x400mtrs relay=3rd-4-18mins.
Ever reliable Mark Wilkins won the “A” 5k by over a minute-16-56.7mins and placed 5th in the 1500mtrs 5-20.7mins. In the “B” events V45. Peter Bowell gained 2nd place in the 5k-19-33.7mins and in 4th in the 400mtrs-71.5sec before contributing to the relay squads.
U20 Callum Barling-Jeffries excelled in the “A” events to win the HJ-1-61mtrs, place 3rd in the LJ-5-31mtrs, 2nd in the TJ-11.40mtrs and also run in the relays
In the throws Invicta were represented by V40 David Glendower and team manager V65 John Gilbert. In the “A” events John won the hammer-25-47 mtrs and discus-23.43 mtrs, placed 3rd in the shot-7-70mtrs, 4th in the Jav-25-48mtrs. He also gained points in the “B” TJ-6-03mtrs and ran (after a fashion!!) in the 4x100mtrs-4th-54.4sec. In the “B” string David placed 5th in the shot-6-87mtrs; 4th in the jav-16-15mtrs; 2nd in the discus-20-49mtrs and won the hammer-23.41mtrs.
Despite all these inspired performances the team narrowly missed 2nd place .They are now 3rd in the league table with two remaining fixtures so there is still the possibility of a top- two finish and promotion if full teams can be fielded. The next match is on Sat 10th July at Dartford.
Details are on the club house notice board. Please.......please (especially you Juniors) do support the team.

Alistair clocked 2:14.67 then Jacob [left] and Ben [right] clocked 2.08.08 and 2:06.40 respectively.
A few days earlier, Ben was selected to represent Kent Schools at the Regional Combined Events (pentathlons etc) against 7 S.E. County Schools Teams at the end of June : he celebrated with bronze in last weekend's Kent Schools' individual 800m at Ashford, in pb of 2:02.16
The 800m at Watford on June 16 is one race Kieran Reilly will find hard to forget : first, he was held up in motorway traffic on the way there, and his entry was the last one accepted that evening.
Watford Open June 2010 - Kieran Reilly
Then, in race 16, Kieran was again 'in traffic' when boxed and buffeted in 10th for 500 metres before unleashing a telling surge down the back straight to come off the last bend 2nd and cross the line in 1min 58.97 to trim 3 hundredths off Tim Davis's 1994 u-17 IEK record.

Lydia wins Shot - Sprinters outnumber the rest in Match 2 of KYAL

Lydia Gallyer Barnett broke through the 7 metre barrier for the first time to win the u-13 Shot with a National grade 3 effort of 7.16m Kent YAL 2010 - Erith - Max Farnell and Max Farnell [pictured LEFT stylishly winning the Javelin] actually had the lane entirely to himself for the whole 100m and his 14.0 secs comfortably heads our u-13 ranking for 2010.
Jaffer Adams (u-15) was just too powerful for the rest and swept to 100 and 200 sprint double - along with three 1st year u-13 female clubmates, he spearheaded the 9 sprints which dominated IEK's 20 performances on a cloudy Bank Holiday Monday at Bexley AC's track in Erith.
In the team scoring sprints, Poppy Collins recorded National Grade 3 for both 75m and 150m, while Annabel Knight first posted Grade 3 in the short sprint, then a Grade 4 for the longer sprint.
Rhiannon Wallwork won the u-13 Discus and High jump then raced, unchallenged,Kent YAL 2010 - Erith - u13 Girls relay in a non-scoring 150m to equal Poppy's Grade 3 of 21.2 to consolidate Rhiannon's growing stature in this age group - she'd already set a new u-13 club record for 300m at the Club championships a week earlier.
The u-13 Girls' relay squad for 4x100 is pictured right - Rhiannon (centre, facing the camera) and clockwise, Lydia [right} Poppy and Annabel (left) together overcame Blackheath and were only narrowly pipped by Tonbridge.
5 IEK contested middle distance events, 2 boys + 3 girls - Nathan and Jacob MacNally (both u-15) ran life-time bests in the 800m and 1,500m respectively, while Lilly Coward lead majestically from start-to-finish to win the u-15 800m by 50 meters.
Kent YAL 2010 - Erith - Anna W & Molly D
Molly Dawson [half hidden 3rd from right] was 9th in 1,000m where Anna Weston outwitted the Tonbridge favourite {4th from Left] by spotting a mid-way powerful surge by the new Cambridge Harrier, hidden far right. The light blue then made an impressive bid for victory 200m from home but couldn't shake off the resolute Anna whose best finish yet in the last 30metres not only won the race but also posted a time which puts her in the club's top 5 all-time u-13 list.

Anna Alvarez silver & bronze at Southerns - Jaffer 200m bronze

SEAA 2010 - Anna Alvarez15 young IEK competitors at the Southern Championships at Ashford appeared in 8 finals and produced 3 medals - two for throws and one for sprinting.
Recently departed coach and grandfather Steve Jones would have been proud that Anna Alvarez (pictured RIGHT, capturing bronze at javelin with her first ever throw over 30 metres) also bagged silver for Shot Putt with an u-15 National Grade 1 throw of 9.98m and was also 5th in the Hammer.
Another of Steve's proteges, Scarlett Mann (u-17) put in 2 season best performances - 12.67 (heats of 80m hurdles) then a National Grade 2 of 5.22m for 6th in the final of the long jump.
SEAA 2010 - Jaffer Adamsu-15 sprint phenomenon Jaffer Adams [pictured LEFT on Day 2 qualifying for 100m final where he was 6th] clinched bronze for 200m on Day 1, recording National grade 2 times in heat and final of BOTH events.
U-17s Annabel Carter (43.98) and Megan Eeles (44.01) both missed qualifiying for the 300m final by a whisker, while Kegan Goldsack Marsh (24.05) shaved 3 hundredths off his 200m best this season.
Sam Hudson reached the u-17 Men's semi-final of a particularly talented 800m field, where, in separate heats, Ben & Jacob Burton were within 5 hundredths of each other.
Beth Burnett ran bravely in her 800m heat, while Rebecca Weston had to watch her 800m final from the stadium physio bed as rivals plundered medals in times Rebecca has bettered all season so far.
Jake Rogers, Chris Thomas and Luke Dawson all ran 1500m heats in torrential rain, while Kieran Reilly produced the highest IEK individual track standard at these championships, first a National Grade 2 in the heats and then, in the final, producing his 3rd Grade 1 time this season to finish 6th in a fine, tactical 1500m.

Bev Newing new u-20 record - Max Farnell 1cm short of record

Max Farnell had a bitter-sweet day : first, a disastrous 100m where a rival raced in front of him (in Max's lane!) for all of 95 metres.... then a super long jump of 4.52m, just 1cm short of the 17 year-old u-13 club record.
The u-17 Men provided the tightest 300m of the day when Chris Monticolombi was crowned club champion over Dan Langridge, both recording identical times.
Annabel Carter weathered Megan Eeles' storming first half and then held off Laura Clark's final surge, to become 2010 u-17 club 300m champion.

BMC races at Milton Keynes - May 2010

Five young IEK all produce best performances at Milton Keynes

In perfect evening conditions, 5 young IEK runners gave notice of high level racing at the BMC Academy races for young athletes. Two weeks earlier, Sam Hudson (u-17) and Lilly Coward (u-15) had each set lifetime bests for 800m in their heats of the Kent Championship at Ashford - Sam now posted 2min 02.9 to shave half a second off his 800m best, and Lilly's 2min 28.28 nicked 3 tenths off her Kent heat time.
To simulate Championship heat/final schedules, Jason Prickett and Rebecca Weston successfully completed a race programme of two fast races within a few days where the second race is faster : both raced top quality times at BMC 2010 - Milton Keynes - Jason PrickettCrawley on Wednesday and, here, both went even faster, each with a National Grade 1 time.
Rebecca focused on winning the race against unknown opposition and in the process posted a season best of 2min 13.41 putting her 8th u-17 in the country
Jason (LEFT - pacemaker running onto infield) raced a strong u-20 field to finish 3rd in 1min 54.65 to put him in UK's top 30 in the country.
Anna Weston (u-13) was the only IEK athlete to tackle 1500m : she stalked the BMC pacemaker all the way (at one stage pushing to lead him...!) and her 5mins 09.72 puts her second among ALL IEK females this season, with only sister Rebecca faster.

Southern Men’s League - Match 2 - Sutton - Div 4E

In the 2nd meeting of this season's Southern Men’s League IEK fielded a stronger team than in the 1st match and consequently were able to lead the competition throughout the afternoon and eventually achieve a clear victory by some 20 points. The momentum was established in the 1st event- the shot-where Aaron Murray surpassed with his every throw the distance recorded by the 2nd place athlete-his best registering 11.94 mtrs-just short of his personal best set at the previous match. In the “B” string newcomer to the club David Glendower was competing in the SML for the 1st time and did well to finish in 3rd-7.30mtrs. Aaron contested all the other throwing events winning the “B” hammer-25.52 mtrs, finishing 6th in the “A” javelin-25.97mtrs and 3rd in the “A” discus-28.61mtrs. Team manager John Gilbert partnered Aaron in these events and placed 2nd in the “A” hammer-26.77mtrs and 3rd in both the “B” javelin-25.52mtrs and discus-22.20mtrs.
A huge contribution to the success of the team was also made by u17 Joe Marchant-making his debut in the men’s league- and u20 junior Daniel Langridge. The pair achieved victories in the 800mtrs-Joe in the “A”-2-15.3- and Daniel in the “B”-2-34.6. In the 400mtrs Daniel won again in the “B” race-61.3sec-with Joe 2nd in the “A”-59.2sec. Daniel also contested the 100mtrs “A” race placing 3rd-13.1sec. Both young men also recorded 1mtr in the High Jump and collected valuable point with Joe 5th in the “A” and Daniel 3rd in the “B”. Mark Wilkins also contributed to the points haul by winning both the “A” 5k -16.22.1-and the 1500mtrs-4.44.8- a remarkable achievement considering that he had only an hour’s recovery between these events.
Perhaps the most significant impact on the team’s performance was made by brothers Lee and Paul Rogers who had only joined the club days earlier. Both are experienced athletes who specialize in the hurdles events, where Invicta have not had competitors for some years now. The pair won both hurdles races-the 110mtrs-Lee “A” -21.1sec-Paul-“B”-21.3-and the 400mtrs-Lee “A”-66.7sec- Paul-“B”-68.8sec. They also contested the 200mtrs with Lee finishing 3rd in the “A”-26.2sec- and Paul in the same position in the ”B”-26.8sec. Moving to the Long Jump Paul placed 5th in the “A”-4.45mtrs- with Lee in the same position in the “B”-3.58mtrs. Lee still found the energy to finish 3rd in the “B” 100mtrs -12.7sec and 2nd in the “B” 1500mtrs-6-25.8. The brothers then combined with Daniel, Joe and Mark to place 2nd in the 4x100mtrs relay-58.8- and win the 4x400mtrs -4-05.9.
The best example of willingness to do whatever was required to gain points came in the Triple Jump where Aaron Murray and David Glendower-two specialist throwers-respectively recorded “A”-7.88mtrs and “B”-7.31mtrs.
This is the first time in many seasons that Invicta have won a SML match and demonstrates how competitive the club is when able to cover a wide range of events. We still particularly need pole vaulters and to know that our athletes will make themselves available for all the matches. It would be very nice if winning became a habit!!
Our next fixture in on Sat 5th June at Luton. Details are on the club house notice board. Please.......please (especially you Juniors) do support the team.

BMC races at Crawley Open - May 2010

British Milers' Club at Crawley feature 8 IEK members

Crawley Open May 2010 - Jason PrickettJason Prickett (u-20) is pictured 7th (leader out of shot) heading toward the bell in a fast 800m A race which he would eventually finish 4th among Senior Men in 1:55.07 - one tenth short of his National Grade 1 lifetime best only 3 weeks ago.
Kent silver medallist Kieran Reilly (u-17) continues his build-up of high level race experience, this time with a finely judged 4th in the 1500m A race : the bonus was clipping 2 seconds off his previous best with his second National Grade 1 in a month and, in the process beating Alistair Moses who 7-8 years ago was regularly clocking sub-3:50.
4th in their respective 800 and 1500 races against older opposition were Jake Rogers and Chris Thomas (both u-17) while Rebecca Weston was pipped, right on the line, by a Guildford & Godalming rival in a strong 800m.
Pictured in their first BMC race, Red Sparrows Anna Weston (430) and Lilly Coward [far left]Crawley Open May 2010 - Anna Weston & Lilly Coward raced shoulder-to-shoulder for the whole 1500m to finish half a second apart after a scintillating sprint shoot-out, Lilly getting there just ahead and earning a finger-wagging from the Referee for 'drifting' into Anna's path on the final 50metres.
In the last race of the evening, Ali Noel won his 800m race, 3 seconds outside his best despite a near-suicidal fast opening lap.

Road running 2010

Summer Road Relays from Folkestone

Tuesday 12th of May saw the start of this season's summer road relays. The first round took place at Fokestone, just past the Rotunda pleasure park.
Invicta had a good turn out - it was good to see two senior men teams competing. Our best age group being the M50 men, they won, so big well done to them, the team comprising, John Wilkins (16:32), Roger Newson (17:14) and Tevor Edgley coming down to a younger age group (17:30).
Our W45 women also won their race, a good solid performance from the team of Vicky Talbot-Rosner (17:34), Sharon Hawkins (16:42) and Sue Cooper (18:43)
Our senior men A-squad finished 3rd overall, with our fastest runner being Mark Wilkins (13:59) 3rd fastest individual on the day. It was good to see strength in depth with our senior mens squad, 6 of our runners were in the top 20 overall times, three of these being our U17s!
Our M40s did not have a complete team - a big shame - nor did our senior women! Liz Weeks was our fastest female on the day with 16:13 and was 4th quickest female overall, with Heidi Coleman 5th quickest female - come on girls get down to the relays and run, you have a good team now, let's see some numbers turning out!!!

I've now handed team management duty over to Tom Purnell full-time for the relays, so he is the man you need to see for team selections and numbers at future races.

Track & Field 2010

Southern Mens League-Match 1 Sat 1/5/10-Newham Div 4E

Our 1st match of the new season saw 6 Invicta athletes make the journey to Essex to represent the club. The host Team have not yet provided detailed results so at this stage I will refer to those that I have and report on the others when they come to hand. Callum Barling-Jeffries cleared 1-55m in the “A” string HJ to gain 3rd while John Gilbert finished equal 2nd in the “B”event with 1.00m. Callum and John also contested the LJ. Junior Daniel Langringe was making his first appearance in the Mens League and says that he enjoyed it very much and will encourage his fellow Juniors to join him at future matches. In the 100m Daniel ran 13.2secs to claim 5th place in the “A” race while team manager John Gilbert collected 1 point for his distinguished last place in the “B”event-17.8sec. Daniel also competed in the 400m “B” race with Tom Purnell in the “A” string. Tom also did the “A” 800m and came 3rd -2-09.1-and the 1500m. Mark Wilkins very bravely contested the treble-800m; 1500m and 5K.
Aaron Murray and John Gilbert contested all the throwing events. Aaron is still a Junior and had not competed since the club championship last September so his win in the “A” shot with a personal best-12-14m-was particularly pleasing and bodes well for the season ahead. John Gilbert managed 3rd in the “B”-7-95. John was also 3rd in the “A” hammer with Aaron in the “B” string. After the Javelin the final event, the discus, took place in torrential rain and the officials suspended the competition after the qualifying rounds. It was something of an achievement to even register a valid throw as the discus more resembled a bar of soap!!!
The match result saw IEK in 5th place among the 7 teams present.
Particular thanks to Gilien Davison for transporting Invicta Competitors to the match and then officiating all afternoon as Track Referee when requested at short notice to take on this responsibility by the host club.
The 2nd match is this coming Sat 15/5 at Sutton. The “sign-up” sheet and other details are on the club house notice board. Please....please (especially you Juniors) do support the team.

Southern Counties VAC League - Kent Div 2, match 2, Canterbury

As host club for this fixture at our home track it was a pity that Invicta could only field 5 competitors in the mens match and 1 in the womens. Congratulations to those who did make the effort to represent the club. The men did well in the 400m with Martin Kelk placing 3rd in the 35+ “A” race- 61.1 –and Dave Weston 3rd in the “B” race-68.8. In the 50+age group Richard Hudson (73.7) ran well to finish 4th. Richard then moved on to the 3K where 15-24.2 saw him finish 5th. Sue Cooper contested this same distance in the womens 50+ race and won by over a minute in 12-39.6. Very well done Sue. In the TJ Martin Kelk covered 8-68m in the 35+ event to finish 4th while John Gilbert was 2nd in the 60+ competition-5-56m. The mens hammer saw IEK gain maximum points with victories for newcomer David Glendower in the 35+ -23.20m (a new personal best) and John Gilbert in the 50+ -29.68m. Sue Cooper showed her versatility by placing 3rd in the womens 50+ hammer-11-73m- and individually earned sufficient points for IEK to finish 5th among the 6 competing clubs. The mens combined points placed them 4th among the 7 clubs present.
The 3rd match of the season is next Monday 17/5 at Erith and will comprise 100m; 800m; 4x200m relay; LJ and discus. The timetable, track details etc are on the club notice board. Please “sign-up” or see me when I am up at the track on Thurs or just turn-up on the night in the unlikely event that we were over-subscribed guest races are always available .YOU WILL GET COMPETITION. Do contact me if you have any queries or problems. Please do support the team.

Kent T&F Championships 2010

Day 1, Anna hammers IEK record, 30 IEK finalists net 8 medals

IEK came away with 3 Gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals on a cold, windy, showery Day 1 of Kent Championships at Ashford.
With only a standing throw, Anna Alvarez improved her own u15 IEK record by 1.20m to take gold in the Hammer, while Jason Prickett (u20) and Rebecca Weston (u17) went to the start line as favourites of 800m and 1500m respectively, and duly raced to gold by handsome margins. Jason's winning time was to be 2 seconds faster than the Senior men's winning time and for Rebecca it was step one toward succesful defence of double 800/1500 titles from 2009.
James Reilly (u20 800m) and Kieran Reilly (u17 1500m) both improved their bronze at last year's championships to silver this time round - Kieran's final featured no fewer than 6 IEK athletes. Sprinter Jaffer Adams (u15) was pipped on the line by the narrowest of margins in 100m.
By posting IEK's fastest two times in both heat and final, Annabel Carter (u17) thoroughly merited bronze for 300m in a final featuring 3 IEK athletes, while in u17 Triple Jump Scarlett Mann took bronze.

Day 2 - Anna's 3rd, Rebecca & Scarlett's 2nd gold - 4 vets get gold 3 in IEK record time - 22 IEK finalists net 15 more medals

Intermittent sunshine on Day 2 at Ashford - IEK athletes hauled in 10 Gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze to bring the total to 23 over the two days of the County Championships : 4 medals for sprinting, 2 for jumps, 3 for throws and 14 for middle distance.
David Glendower started IEK's dazzling Day 2 with 6th in the final of the first field event, the Senior Men's Hammer, having already made Shot + Discus finals on Day 1.
In the first track event of Day 2, Sharon Hawkins (v45) Vicky Talbot Rosner (v50) and Tim Sutton (v40) each took Gold at 5,000m, Janice Moorekite clinching v50 silver. Icing on the cake was Sharon improving Liz Batty's IEK v45 record and Vicky bettering Ruth Kay's v50 mark. Later in the day, Sharon Hawkins took bronze at 1,500m in the open competition for Seniors.
Jaffer Adams (u15) was a scintillating winner of 200m with sprint stablemate Chris Chancellor (u20) a fine bronze medallist at 400m while Scarlett Mann took her 2nd gold of the championships, this time at Long Jump.
Kieran Reilly (u17) more than made up for last year's disqualification for silver : a supremely judged race on the final back straight, with a majestic final sprint, brought well-deserved 800m Gold in a race where, again, half the finalists were IEK. The bonus for Kieran was his first sub-2 mins, which makes him IEK's 2nd fastest ever in this age group.
Anna Alvarez (u15) was IEK's most successful athlete of the day, adding Javelin and Shot Put gold to the hammer gold on Day 1, her Shot only 3cm short of Liz Gibbens's 1991 IEK record.
Rebecca Weston had to fight off the close physical challenge of an old Tonbridge rival to successfully defend her 800m crown. Rebecca joins Julie Rose, Kelly Holmes and Lisa Dobriskey who all won Kent double 800 + 1500 twice each as u17s.
In a competitive 800m final, Bobby Clay (u15 Girls) managed a fine bronze against girls one year older while, in the 1500m, Jason Prickett (u20) was on course for a county 800/1500 double before being caught out down the last back straight and had to settle for silver.
Martin Kelk rounded off the day with a 2,000m S/chase vet-40 gold, beating Peter Bowell's IEK record by 6 seconds

Track racing 2010

Grace & Ali post PBs - Jason Prickett fastest IEK 800m in 20 years

At Watford's 3rd Open of 2010, three young IEK members (two u-17s + one u-20) scorched round the track faster than they'd ever run 800m before - Grace Leggatt improved her 800m best by 2 seconds in a fast Race 2 while, from lane 1 of Race 5, Ali Noel (also u-17) made sure he wasn't boxed in at the break and his keen involvement with the race ensured he battled his way to 2mins 10.7, a massive personal best by over 7 seconds.
Jason Prickett (u-20) raced astutely in the top race of the evening, passing the bell 9th of 9 then picking off 2 rivals down the back straight and two more off the final bend to finish 5th in a blanket with 4 Senior Men from Portsmouth, Guildford, Coventry, and Brchfield : Jason's time of 1min 54.94 betters his best by 3 seconds and is a National Grade 1 for u-20 - more, it is the fastest 800m by any club member for the last 20 years and is within 2 seconds of James Websters's u-20 IEK record of 1:53.0 set in 1989.
Meanwhile, Chris Holmes continues to impress with IEK's first sub-16 time at 5,000m in a decade : Chris was 11th in the heats of the British Universities Championships at Bedford in 15mins 48.62 - almost 40 seconds faster than when winning the IEK internal Club Championship in 2009 at Canterbury.

Whitstable 10K - 2010

Heidi wins women's race to lead IEK Women to 2nd at Whitstable

Seven IEK members rose to the occasion at the Bank Holiday Whitstable 10K which was refereed by our own Gilien Davison and was promoted by Canterbury Harriers.
Electronic timing by our own IEK Chip Timing System showed that it took 42 seconds for 557 starters to cross the start line.
Road - Whitstable 10K 2010 - Heidi Coleman
Heidi Coleman (595) pictured at the start line with Janice Moorekite (567) - Heidi was 2nd fastest IEK member on the day when she made light of windy conditions to comfortably win the Ladies section, leading IEK Ladies to team silver with Vicky Talbot Rosner (8th Lady in 42:40) and Janice Moorekite 41st in 49:40)
Road - Whitstable 10K 2010 - Andy Waymont
In his debut road race in IEK red, Andy Waymont (the cool dude in dark glasses) was 3rd scorer for the Men's team when only 14 seconds behind longest-serving club member Peter Bowell (46 in 41:16) - Andy was 22 seconds ahead of Roger Newson who was 55th in a field of 556 finishers.
The only IEK member to break 40 mins on the day was evergreen vet John Wilkins [smartest IEK at Whitstable - the only member in full official club colours] who made the top 25 in 39:13

London Marathon 2010

4 IEK Men, 2 Women + 2 young athletes shine in London Marathon

Tim Sutton, Steve Burt and Michael Gallyer-Barnett all broke the 4hr mark in London while, contrary to earlier reports that Tim Kerr (4hrs 09mins 35secs) completed two other marathons (Paris & Dublin) in the 4 weeks leading up to London, Tim confirms he used only Paris (3:49:53) as warm-up for this one... Dublin (in October) was not one of his, and he'd decided against entering Belfast in early May.
NB - each IEK member's name is linked to their official split times.... just click on their underlined name + time
Fastest IEK on the day was Liz Weeks (3hrs 07mins 37secs) who not only went close to breaking 3 hours but also was within a minute of Maidstone Harriers leading lady, Sharon Hawkins, who posted 3hrs 06mins 27secs
Lily Martin (3hrs 35mins 35secs) ran her debut marathon in London : her previous outing in IEK red was winning the u-20 Kent 800m track championship 3 years ago.
After more than 26 miles of focused racing in just under 3 1/2 hrs, it was almost an IEK photo finish when only 20 seconds separated Tim Sutton (3hrs 29mins 33secs) and new member Steve Burt (3hrs 29mins 53secs) while Michael Gallyer-Barnett (3hrs 58mins 47secs) was 3rd IEK man home
Highest IEK placing on the day was Bobby Clay (18mins 30 secs) who was 6th in her age group mini-marathon over a 3 mile course, while unluckiest IEK athlete of the day was Jake Rogers (17 mins 06 secs) who put in a herculean sprint for the line in the u-17 race.... only to find he was only half way there - we're proud to report that Jake refused to quit and hung on gamely to finish 38th
