Watford Gold Standard BMC 800m
Invicta athlete smashes two minute barrier
< Sam Dobin in 2005 Kent Schools XC
Middle distance runner Sam Dobin, set a new PB and dipped under 2mins during the Watford Gold Standard BMC meeting which was held on May 8th.
Sam took part in the B race 800m and finished 4th overall out of a field of eight runners. Even more impressive though is the time he achieved, this being a rather swift 1:57.85
PHIL POWERS TO VICTORY!
Phil Anthony won the Ted Pepper 10k which was held on May 6th with a strong time of 32:52.

The Peter Mullervy coached athlete had no trouble at the front of the field with a full minute in hand over the 2nd place finisher.
The result marks a good few weeks for Phil, who has earned his GB Vest for the upcoming European Duathlon Championships.
Mark Wilkins sets new 10k pb
Invicta`s Mark Wilkins smashed his personal best during the Whitstable 10k, finishing in 6th place overall with a time of 35:10.
Marks performance capped a very strong day for Invicta East Kent AC, who were the 2nd team on the day and finished top Kent team in the race. This boads well for the 2008 Kent Grand prix and will see Invicta climb strongly up the table.
Invicta packed strongly in the race with five runners from the club home in the top 25. Sharon Hawkins finished 3rd lady in the race with a time of 39:30.
Age group winners from Invicta included the following:
Mike Conway won the M60s with 40:34
Vicky Talbot-Rosner won the W45s with 43:13
Janice Moorekite won W50s with 48:05.
FULL RESULTS CAN BE FOUND BY GOING TO THE EVENTS SECTION AND CLICKING ON THE WHITSTABLE 10K.
Well done everyone good effort! next two Kent Grand prix races are Larkfield 10k May 18th then Dartford Half Marathon on July 20th.

SUPER BETH GETS HER THIRD ENGLAND VEST AT WORLD SCHOOLS XC
Beth Carter competed in her 3rd England vest of the season..... 1) International match in Spain in January, and 2) Home International Schools in Scotland in March. Here the race was on very European short, fast, dry, flat terrain, on a course of 3 x 1km laps. Beth prefers hilly, muddy courses like Parliament Hill where, when winning the Southren Region Championship in January she beat the No 1 in this team, Louise Small, for the only time this season.

Louise Small was 9th in this world event, only 7 secs in front of Beth who was 13th, just behind the 4th scorer from New Zealand, the winning team. Two England girls were just behind Beth to complete the England score and this tight English packing ensured team bronze, ahead of strong teams from Australia, Belgium and Spain. Beth was particularly pleased to have bettered team-mates Annika Jarman and Rebecca Craigie who had beaten her last month in English Schools Championship on the fast flat course in Liverpool's Sefton Park.
This prestigious event eluded Invicta international, Charlotte Dale, who was eventual European u-20 champion in Croatia in 2001, and the only other Invicta member to have been selected was Henny Freeman who 10 years ago, as England's 5th finisher, came 66th in Latvia and then, one year later, took the English national title in Stowe, Bucks.
KYAL SUTCLIFFE PARK
The opening fixture of the Kent Young Athletes League took place over the weekend.
Performances of note included:
Girls u13
--------------------
Anna Alvarez is the current Kent hurdles champion and holds Invicta u-13 records for both hurdles and javelin. On Sunday she won three events and, in the process, notched up two Grade 2 + one Grade 3 - inevitably the Grade 2s were for 70m hurdles and Javelin.... the Grade 3 for the Long Jump.
Girls u15-Division 2
--------------------
Jessie Rabey who achieved a grade 4 time in the 300m 45.7!
Annabelle Carter achieved grade 4 in the 800m 2:35.3
Scarlett Mann had an outstanding day, getting three graded ratings!!! these were achieved in High jump Grade 4 with 1.40m, she then got a Grade 2 in the Long jump with 4.71m before getting her second Grade 4 mark in the Shot Putt with 7.09.
Boys u13-Divison 2
------------------
Louis Duprez achieved a grade 4 during the 800m with 2:40.7. with Oliver Neal getting a grade 4 in the Javelin with 21.81m
Boys u15-Divison 2
------------------
Sam Hudson achieved grade 4 in the 800m 2:17.5
Alex Newson ran a Grade 2 time in the 1500m with 4:30.0
The most impressive display for Invicta was achieved in the 3000m, with both A string and B string runners getting graded. Jake Rogers getting a grade 2 time of 9:42.4, closely followed by a grade 3 time by Hugo Hayes with 9:48.8!
Some intresting facts to take note of:
--------------------------------------
The Boys team (u-13 + u15) won the match with 182 pts to Ashford's 172. Fourteen (14) of the 17 performances by Invicta boys, came from the middle-distance squad, and ALL 8 Invicta boys in the two winning sprint relay teams, are middle distance runners - only one boy, is from the sprint squads and he did 3 individual performances.
However, the combined u-13 and u-15 Girls (225 pts) came 2nd to Ashford (310) and here only 4 of the 20 performances were done by the middle-distance squad and only one middle-distance girl went in the 4x100 which came 2nd.
We need to encourage more jumpers, sprinters and throwers to turn out at matches, and not let the middle-distance squad hog the limelight, especially by them winning sprint relays into the bargain !!!
Full results now available on KYAL which is located in the Events section.
Invicta Open Graded Evening April 22nd
There were 44 PBs.... 11 season bests and.... four (4) new Invicta club records - two sprint records to a new boy Jaffar Adams, one to Anna Alvarez, fresh from her triumphant hatrick of wins in the Kent League last Sunday, and one to Jake Rogers who led no fewer than 4 clubmates to also beat the record set only one year ago by Kieran Reilly at one of Invicta's first ever Open Meetings.
Thanks also to Starter and Marksman, Ray & Sue Gladman, as well as to officials Gilien Davison and Mick Rendell who lead teams of judges and timekeepers.

Flora London Marathon
Sharon Hawkins was the first Invicta runner home during the London Marathon held on April 13th. Her finish time was 3:01.45.
Sharon finished 9th overall in her age group catagory and started with the Elite females.
Two other Invicta runners took part in the Marathon.
Tim Sutton being the first male Invicta runner home. He had the job of being the offical Runners World Magazine 8min mile race pace maker and did a very good job! he finished in 3:29.05

Brian Wood completed the Invicta participents in this years race. Brian finished with a time of 4:05.55.
Meanwhile.... a number of younger Invicta East Kent AC Athletes took part in the Flora London Mini Marathon.
Nine young Invicta members - 5 boys and 4 girls - were selected by Julie Roe to represent Kent Schools in the London Mini-marathon 3 mile races for young athletes. All the mini races finished in the Mall, after sweeping past Buckingham Palace.
Three age group races were all run under European age group rules which go simply by year of birth : the nearest they have to our u-13 is 'anyone born in 1995 & 96' ... the u-15 equivalent is anyone born in 1993 & 94 ... and the u-17 equivalent is anyone born in 1991 & 92. Much easier from team managers' point of view and, easier for the youngsters to understand.
In the 'u-13' races, Invicta's Alex Clay, from Wingham (44th) was 3rd Kent finisher in the Girls race to help Kent to 11th overall, while Kent College student Louis Duprez (48) was the 4th Kent scorer in the boys team which was 17th overall. Since Louis was born in 1996 it means that, if Kent are invited again next year, he will still be in the same age group, if selected.
Five Invicta youngsters featured in the 'u-15' races, where coincidentally, both the Boys and the Girls teams were 8th against international teams from England Scotland and Wales.
For the Boys, Eastry's Alex Newson (13) and Kings School student Hugo Hayes (37) and Chilham's Jack Balsdon (42) were 1st, 3rd and 4th Kent scorers, while, for the Girls, Kent College student Rebecca Weston (28) and Bossingham's Emma Cottrell (50) were 1st and 3rd Kent scorers. Hugo, Jack, Rebecca and Emma were all born in 1994 so they will still be u-15 in next year's race, if selected.
Hersden's Jason Prickett (53rd) showed the measure of his progress since joining Invicta a year ago when he helped Kent to 10th place by finishing 4th Kent scorer in the 'u-17' race. In the same age race for Girls, Kent College student Beth Carter from Westbere took a well-deserved individual bronze when she lead Kent to 9th place overall. Both Jason and Beth were born in 1992 which means they were among the youngest in their race and will still be in the same European age groupings in next year's Mini-marathon - again, if selected.
This was Beth's last competitive race before she goes to the Czech Republic next week to make her debut at world level in the world student cross-country championships in real cross-country terrain where the priority is the racing, not the television coverage - good news for Beth, as she has 'previous' when following TV quad bikes......
Big well done to everyone who took part. The 2009 Ballot for the Flora London Marathon is now open.
(Special thanks must go to the Maidstone Harriers who kindly gave permission to use two of their Flora London Marathon photos for the website!)

Annual awards 2007
Our traditional award evening was held on Saturday 8th December at Petham Village Hall : awards were presented for cross-country (winter 2007/7) for track 2007 and also everyone who took part in the Club Championships in September.

Annual ward winners were
National Vet 50 cross-country champion John Wilkins was voted male veteran cross-country athlete of 2007
Callum Barling Jeffery was u-17 Men's jumper of the year, showing prowess at triple as well as high jump
Anthony Culshaw (u20) was both u20 thower of 2007 and, for his consistent appearances in the Men's Southern League, was also voted joint Senior Men's thrower of the year, along with evergreen John Gilbert.
Emmeline Rendell competed at the English Schools in July, having become the first Invicta female ever to clear 3.00 metres in the pole vault when, as an u-17, she competed as an u-20 at Croydon in April.
The '3 Gazelles' picture, taken at English Schools in Birmingham in July, is of 3 middle distance training partners who broke a combined total of 15 Invicta records in 5 months. Emily Hosker Thornhill (L) set total of six u-15 records across 4 events, Beth Carter (centre) set two new u-17 records (2,000m and 5,000m - the latter at the Invicta Open evening in September ranks her 2nd among u-17s in England this year) while Rebecca Weston (R) overhauled no fewer than seven u-15 records in 3 events.
Rebecca obliterated the u-15 Mile record by 20 seconds and 3 times improved the mark in 1500m, the event she raced at the English Schools. She also revised the 800m record 3 times, once each in May, June and July. Emily showed great versatility with 2 new sprint records (150m for 300m) and she too revised the 800m record 3 times (all in the space of 3 weeks in June) plus setting an all-time female Invicta record at 1,000m. at an Invicta Open meeting at the Canterbury High School track in early July.
The 800m record had withstood the challenge of many talented Invicta athletes for nearly 30 years - including Marika Hayward, Charlotte Dale and Beth Carter : in an 8-week purple patch spanning May and June, the 27 year-old record of 2.21.5 set by Nicola Hughes in 1979, was revised weekly (almost daily in mid-June) by both Emily and Rebecca, in a way very reminiscent of the Coe-Ovett 1,500m world record spree in the 1980s.
In early May, Emily had served notice of what was to come when winning the District Schools under the magical 2mins 20 barrier but in a race timed by timekeepers not officially Graded. At the County Championship in mid-May, Rebecca officially bettered the long-standing club record when taking gold in front of Emily's silver and an unparalleled record spree ensued as they finished up improving the figures 3 times each.
The peak was a four-day stint in mid-June - Emily's new mark in winning an Intercounties 800m in Bedford on the Saturday lasted just 24 hours : Rebecca stormed round Deangate in a Kent League match on the Sunday, only for Emily to go one better at the same track in an Open meeting, just 3 days later. The formidable and historic total 6 revisions came to an end in late July when Rebecca finally claimed the record for herself in a titanic head-to-head race at Dartford.
Athlete of the Year
Beth Carter was voted joint female Athlete of the Year with Melissa Cooper : Beth ran for the England Schools in the Home International in March and, days after her 15 birthday, was 6th in a star-studded field of u-20s in the prestigious British Grand Prix at Crystal Palace in July. Despite her tender years, Beth is ranked 27th at 5000m among ALL females in UK including seniors, led by Jo Pavey.
Melissa is ranked 4th among u-20 hammer throwers and 22nd among all females in UK : this season she has three times broken Invicta's all time female best, her best is just a footprint short of 50metres and is also exactly 5metres short of the best u20 thower in the country.
The u-11s are (L-R) Kieran Hawkins (winner Long Jump and 80m, 2nd soft Javelin) , Naomi Hawkins (winner soft Javelin, 3rd 80m) , Eve Marie Gilbert (winner, soft Shot Put) and Anna Weston - younger sister of Rebecca - (2nd 600m)

Individual Silver for Michael Conway in the o/60s
Silver for the Lady V/45 team
Vicky Talbot-Rosner finished 4th in both the O/45 and the Clubwomen races!

Deal 5
A total of 13 Invicta members featured in the Deal 5 Mile where our Women matched the Men's individual silver and team bronze with an individual silver, and team bronze, of their own. While the Men's combined total time of four scoring racers was some 7 mins behind Deal Tri's silver, it almost exactly 6 minutes faster than Canterbury Harriers' quartet. Our Women's combined total (three-to-score) was less than a minute behind Deal Tri and a comfortable 5 mins ahead of Folkestone.
In the Men's race, u-20 newcomer to the club Rob Jackson reproduced the form that has seen him unbeaten in this season's u-20 Kent XC league as he crossed line in 26mins 37secs, only half a minute behind Folkestone's John Creane, the pre-race favourite. Rob lead a very mixed Invicta age-group squad to team bronze : fellow u-20 Nick Little (31:17) was 22nd Man to finish and the medal winning quartet was completed by two vintage performers. Evergreen Vet-60 Michael Conway (32:48)ran a stormer for 35th male just ahead of a Canterbury Harrier and Vet-50 John Batty was 52nd male to finish in 34:16.
Junior runner Chris Little (28:53) made 122nd in his first ever road run at this distance, while in a blanket finish of 6 runners, only 8 seconds separated Michael Desborough (Vet-50) and Brian Wood who made vet-60 in July : Michael recorded 39:21 after putting in a magnificent last 50m to hold off a challenge of two younger men on a sprint to the line, while Brian was only 8 seconds adrift in 39:29. Next in, was Richard Hudson (41:01) who has competed at all distances on the track this summer and is now looking to break the 40 minutes for this road distance.
Our ladies team came 3rd, led by Heidi Coleman (31:19) who was second individual, 1min 20 behind training partner Helena Penfold who competes for Medway Maidstone. Second Invicta female to finish was Veteran Liz Batty who is gradually getting back in shape - Liz was 10th female home in 36:17 - and Rachel Wood (43:51) completed the red team with a fine run as she held off the challenge of an athlete from Swanscombe Strollers.
Three Invicta members featured in the junior 1,000m race which was won comfortably by our u-15 track 800m champion Sam Hudson in 3mins 14, while 10 year-old Elodie Tweedie was 6th female in 4:15 and 9 year-old Jessica Merryweather was 22nd female on a creditable 5:05. For full results see event page.
Vicky's Marathon Run
Congratulations to Vicky Talbot Rosner who competed in the Amsterdam Marathon. Vicky was hoping to achieve a time of 3.30 but was very pleased to finish with a pb of 3.24. Look at that smile, well done Vicky! Also well done to Sharon Hawkins with a splendid time of 3:02 and to Vet 50 Janice Moorekite who finished in 3:59.

2007 Track & Field Club Championships
Sunday saw the final day of this years club championships. It was a fine day with ideal weather conditions, athletes of all ages competed for the club championship titles. Father and daughter John and Eve-Marie Gilbert certainly took the most senior and junior athletes of the day title with John (vet 60)
in all throws events and Eve-Marie (age 7)
competing in the under 11 events. Invicta were pleased to welcome athletes from Paddock Wood to join us. Paddock Wood were unable to hold their own championships this year so were glad of the opportunity to compete with Invicta. It was a good day enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who helped with the organization and to club chairman James Roberts who was seen rushing from event to event to assist with timing, judging and was even spotted wielding a rake at the triple jump! See event page for results and more photos.
News for September
Apologies from Web admin for lack of news and input, have been on holiday, now it is catch up time!
First of all the Track Relays:
At the track relays 2007 at Norman park, Bromley, we came away with two team medals, both at 3 x 800m: we succesfully defended one title of the 3 gained last year, and we also gained one bronze thanks mainly to exciting performances both from newcomers and also from members whose improvement is down to regular training in the club's junior squads. See young athletes page for full report by James Roberts, plus photos.
Invicta 5,000m club championships 2007:
Held as the feature event at the September edition of our newly introduced monthly open meetings at The Canterbury High School track, we saw five champions declared and one UK ranked performance, all from one graded race.
Deal Tri member Rob Jackson is 2nd claim IEK in the winter, but he qualifies for our club track championships as he is 1st claim IEK on the track : still under-20, Rob was the actual race winner in 15:28.6 when leading from gun to tape in a determined display to overcome both defending club u-20 champion Chris Holmes (3rd) and in-form Rob Dennis (2nd) both of whom broke the 17 minute barrier.
The Senior Men's title was netted by Mike Gore in 17mins 28.7 when he fended off the persistent challenge of new Vet 40 men's champion Peter Bowell. Peter closed at 17:53.0, some 30 secs ahead of fellow vet-40 Martin Kelk (18:21.0) who had a sound run and Peter Mullervy (22:11.7) took the Vet 50 title.
It was encouraging to see Mark Wilkins come through his test of fitness after prolonged absence through injury and we look forward to Mark's return to full fitness over his preferred cross-country.
Unluckiest athlete of the day is Vet 45 women champion, Vicky Talbot Rosner who takes the title despite a lap-counting mix-up which left her one lap short and thus an unofficial 5,000m time : it all means Vicky will have to have another tilt at Sandy Pearce's 1994 vet-45 record of 21:14.0....
IEK 2nd claim members also took to the track : Sam Knight (17:16.3) is a Herne Hill Harrier currently at Canterbury University and while Helena Simkova (19:22.6) made her first appearance under her new married name of Penfold.
5,000m, is not a club championship event for under 17s but we had three encouraging debut runs from the junior ranks : new member David Crane (18:02.5) ran a measured race to finally overtake Kent county runner Andy Cope who closed in 18:09.6. Star performer of the day was Beth Carter whose purposeful run in her first ever track outing at this distance was timed at a remarkable 16:51.8 which is the UK's 2nd fastest time for u-17 females and means she is now the top national rankings for all events between 800m and 5,000m for 2007.
The 800m championships are being held at the Canterbury High School Track on Tuesday 25th September, the 3000m on Thursday 27th September and all other track & field events on Sunday 30th September. See event page for full details and time-table.
