Canterbury 10 Mile Road Road - Report

For the second year in succession, record numbers of runners turned out to take part in the Parker Tools Canterbury 10 Mile Road Race, held on Sunday 22nd January. There were over 1400 entrants and around 1300 finishers. This annual event sponsored once again by Parker Tools, had a new base at Christ Church Sports Centre which proved to be an ideal HQ for the event. The event also supported the Pilgrims Hospices and a donation of £ 1,500 was collected by their Event Organiser Deborah Kellond.

It was an icy and misty morning which did not stop the runners and spectators who lined the picturesque route that is run on quiet lanes to the South of the city.

The race itself resulted in a third victory in a row for Invicta East Kent’s Abel Tsegay who crossed the finishing line in a solid 52m 46 sec. He was followed home in second by Dominic O’Mahoney also from Invicta East Kent in a very fast over 40’s time of 54m 08 sec and in third was 3 times previous winner, Mike Coleman of South Kent Harriers in 54min 47 sec.

The first finisher in a very competitive ladies event was Maria Heslop of Paddock Wood AC in a superb time of 60m 37sec. This is one of the 20 fastest runs of all time by a British V45 lady runner and was her 4th victory in this event in the last 5 years. She was followed home in second by Hazel Behagg of Dartford Road Runners with a strong run to complete the course in 62m 15sec and in third was Claire Day also of Paddock Wood AC with a big personal best of 62m 40sec.

Race Director Glenn Mousley said : “the race ran smoothly with some excellent times, despite the challenging conditions. The runners should be thanked for entering as should the various sponsors who supported the event. We will be back in 2018”

Prizes were presented in a packed hall by Glenn Mousley and Invicta East Kent Coaching Co-ordinator Peter Mullervy.

The event was a huge success and this could not have been done without the hard work of Invicta’s Management Committee, who worked tirelessly to ensure the event ran smoothly on the day. We are also indebted to the volunteers who got up at the crack of dawn on a Sunday to help out; from parents, students, athletes and even the youngsters who kept us supplied with tea and coffee on the freezing morning. Thank you all for your help!

Thank you also to the sponsors; Parker Tools, The Running Outlet and Christ Church University for all their support.
