The opening fixture of the Kent Young Athletes League took place over the weekend.
Performances of note included:
Girls u13
--------------------
Anna Alvarez is the current Kent hurdles champion and holds Invicta u-13 records for both hurdles and javelin. On Sunday she won three events and, in the process, notched up two Grade 2 + one Grade 3 - inevitably the Grade 2s were for 70m hurdles and Javelin.... the Grade 3 for the Long Jump.
Girls u15-Division 2
--------------------
Jessie Rabey who achieved a grade 4 time in the 300m 45.7!
Annabelle Carter achieved grade 4 in the 800m 2:35.3
Scarlett Mann had an outstanding day, getting three graded ratings!!! these were achieved in High jump Grade 4 with 1.40m, she then got a Grade 2 in the Long jump with 4.71m before getting her second Grade 4 mark in the Shot Putt with 7.09.
Boys u13-Divison 2
------------------
Louis Duprez achieved a grade 4 during the 800m with 2:40.7. with Oliver Neal getting a grade 4 in the Javelin with 21.81m
Boys u15-Divison 2
------------------
Sam Hudson achieved grade 4 in the 800m 2:17.5
Alex Newson ran a Grade 2 time in the 1500m with 4:30.0
The most impressive display for Invicta was achieved in the 3000m, with both A string and B string runners getting graded. Jake Rogers getting a grade 2 time of 9:42.4, closely followed by a grade 3 time by Hugo Hayes with 9:48.8!
Some intresting facts to take note of:
--------------------------------------
The Boys team (u-13 + u15) won the match with 182 pts to Ashford's 172. Fourteen (14) of the 17 performances by Invicta boys, came from the middle-distance squad, and ALL 8 Invicta boys in the two winning sprint relay teams, are middle distance runners - only one boy, is from the sprint squads and he did 3 individual performances.
However, the combined u-13 and u-15 Girls (225 pts) came 2nd to Ashford (310) and here only 4 of the 20 performances were done by the middle-distance squad and only one middle-distance girl went in the 4x100 which came 2nd.
We need to encourage more jumpers, sprinters and throwers to turn out at matches, and not let the middle-distance squad hog the limelight, especially by them winning sprint relays into the bargain !!!
