Steve Jones - multi-event coach (1932-2009)

Members will be saddened at the death of Steve Jones, one of our resident coaches with probably the widest and longest experience in all disciplines in athletics.[img:543r] Nothing was ever too much trouble for Steve and he is best remembered for his unwavering cheerfulness and passionate belief that all youngsters should try as many different things as possible, before specialising. While Steve was instrumental in developing talented athletes like Liz Gibbens and Julia Johnson, who were both English Schools champions, Steve always had time and endless patience for young athletes of all levels. Steve regularly took athletes of all ages both to training and to matches all over the place and was a devoted family man, bringing his wife Jenny to many matches and the apple of his eye was his talented multi-eventing grand-daughter Anna. A proposal has been put to the Club to introduce a memorial trophy to recognise the club's most versatile athlete each year, to be presented for the first time in December, at our club awards evening. Steve was 77 years old, was in at the start of East Kent AC (always thought that our current name sounded like an address... Invicta East Kent...?) and was coaching right to the end - we will miss his warm smile and his willingness to help anyone who asked.
