Senior Men County Team Bronze as road runners shine at Sidcup Trevor Edgeley leads UK rankings with individual vet-60 gold

Round two of 2009 Kent Grand Prix was the Sidcup 10-mile on Sunday 8th Feb. In the week before the race, there was concern it could be cancelled, due to recent bad weather. The go-ahead came Friday evening after a safety inspection and conditions on race day were pretty much ideal for this very fast 3-lap course around Sidcup. Many Kent clubs fielded strong squads, as this race doubled as the Kent 10-mile championship : the high standard showed with just 4 seconds separating the three medallists and the first two Michael Coleman (49:57) James Connor (49:59) both dipping just under 50 mins. Invicta athletes had a fantastic day at the office, all with new PBs or SBs, and we even had a UK leading performance of the year from one our vets! Our senior men pulled out all the stops, grabbing Kent County 10-mile team bronze in a very close scrap by only one single point! Leading IEK home, Mark Wilkins was 11th in an impressive 55.07, a PB which would have put him comfortably 4th in our own Canterbury 10 last month. 2nd IEK finisher was Tom Purnell who ran a very controlled and mature race, for a new PB of 61:03. Michael Gore set a SB of 61:36 when completing the scoring team of 3 for the Kent County Champs. The most impressive thing is that all three are senior men, which shows how the club's road running section is improving and getting stronger. John Wilkins carried his 37mins 10k form into this race, finishing just behind our senior men in 62:18, very quick for a Vet-50, while Trevor Edgley scooped Kent vet-60 Gold in 63:30, this year's fastest UK time for his age group. Peter Bowell (vet-40) set a SB, once again with gritted teeth as he ran through injury problems. PBs were set by Tim Kerr, Sue Cooper, and by Brianna Zoll our only senior woman on the day. Michael Conway's SB added to the fantastic post-race vibe and confidence amongst our road runners. 11 Mark Wilkins (SM) 55:07 38 Tom Purnell (SM) 1:01:03 43 Michael Gore (SM) 1:01:36 52 John Wilkins (m50) 1:02:18 60 Trevor Edgley (m60) 1:03:30 84 Peter Bowell (m40) 1:06:04 127 Michael Conway (m60) 1:09:36 197 Tim Kerr (m40) 1:14:11 216 Sue Cooper (w45) 1:15:15 249 Brianna Zoll (sw) 1:17:53 After two rounds, IEK men are 2nd in the 2009 championship just ahead of Larkfield AC. Tunbridge Wells Harriers lead after putting out the largest number of runners on the day. In the women's event, Larkfield AC have a good cushion over Maidstone Harriers and IEK are 9th : our failure to field a full team at Sidcup did not help matters, but things are certain to improve with a larger turn out at future races. In the Senior category, our senior men Thomas Purnell (7) and Michael Gore (13) are both in the top 15 overall individuals. In the male age group categories, Tim Sutton is 6th (M40) with Peter Bowell 23rd. John Wilkins is 5th (M50) while easily our strongest catagory is M60s : Trevor Edgley leads, Michael Conway is 3rd, just ahead of Martyn Rouse. In the female age groups, Sue Cooper (W45) is our leading female, 4th overall, just one place ahead of Vicky Talbot-Rosner.
