SML-Div 4E-Julie Rose-Ashford-11-7-09

With just 6 Invicta athletes contesting this match we still managed 3rd out of 6 teams present. Terry Hawkins (v40) had a particularly busy afternoon. In the A events in only his second PV competition he was 2nd (1.10m), 4th in the 100m (13.9) and 5th in the LJ (4.62m). In the B string he was 2nd in the Shot (8.94m) and 4th in the HJ (1.10m). Terry would have competed in even more events had he not needed to leave early to start his work as a taxi driver (probably much to his relief!!). Callum Barling-Jeffery (u20) also scored valuable points for the team coming 2nd in the A HJ (1.65m),4th in the TJ (10.83m) and 3rd in the B LJ (4.60m). It was pleasing to welcome back Mick Gore even though he has not yet fully recovered from injury. As always Mick gave 101% and was 3rd in both 3k SC (14-19.8) and B 5k (20-59.2) and 5th in the B 400m (86.3). In these events he was partnered by Peter Bowell (v45) who in the A strings was 3rd in the 5k (19-53.8) and 5th in the 400m (73.7) Aaron Murray (u20) continued his impressive progress setting PBs in the Shot (2nd A 11-33m) and Jav (3A-31.79m) while also finishing 2nd in the A Discus (30.17m) and winning the B Hammer (24.17m). For good measure he also placed 4th in the A 200m (35.9). John Gilbert (v65) competed as a guest in the Shot and achieved a season's best 8.10m before placing 3rd in the A Ham (28.16m) and B Jav (26.66m), 2nd in the B Dis (24.12m) and 4th in the B 100m (17.6).

SCVAC-Kent Division-Norman Park, Bromley-12/6/09

As you were!! Just Trevor Edgley and John Gilbert turned out for the 3rd fixture of the Kent Vets League-and still we didn`t finish last - coming 6th out of the 7 teams in Div 2!!! Trevor contested the 50+ 800mtrs and among competitors younger than himself and at a distance which he regards as a “sprint” he did well to finish 6th (2-45.5).He then moved to the LJ where, again in the 50+, he finished 4th (2-98mtrs). To complete the evening in the 60+ events he tried the discus for the 1st time in his life and achieved 12-28mtrs, a very promising debut, and the 100mtrs finishing a creditable 3rd (16-1). John Gilbert won the 60+ discus (31.51mtrs) and scored a few points in the 35+ LJ (2-95mtrs0

SCVAC – Kent Division – Erith Stadium – 13-07-09

A strong Invicta Vets Team turning out in North Kent!! John Gilbert’s nagging must be finally having some effect. In the 35+ A events, Sharon Hawkins (V45) won both the 400m (72.1) and 3K (10m57.5) she was partnered in these events by Sue Cooper (V45) who won the B 400m (85.4) and placed 2nd in the 3K (13m26.8) Sue then contested 2 further events completely new to her – 35+ 2K walk where she came 2nd (15m53.5) – and the hammer which she won (12.98m). What a talent!! (The Tim Kerr of the women’s team??). Talking of Tim Kerr (V45) - in the 35+ category he placed 5th in both the A 400m (73.5) & B 3K (12m26.9) before trying his hand at yet another event new to him – the hammer – where he continued the sequence of 5th’s (5.55m). He’s obviously working his way towards the decathlon!! Martin Kelk (V40) ran well to finish 3rd in 35+ A 3K (10m16.3). Trevor Edgley (V60) competed in the 50+ 400m and did well to finish 4th (73.3) before contesting his own age group 3K where he achieved 2nd (11.08.5). It was very good to welcome back Tony Weston (V55) for his first vets match this season after a long period of injury. Tony soon confirmed that the enforced lay-off had not affected his performance and in the 50+ events he was very pleased to win the PV (2.80), collect 2nd in the TJ (9.03m) and place 3rd in the hammer (10.98m). John Gilbert (V65) won the 60+ hammer (35.93m) and managed 3rd in the 35+ TJ (6.11m). Both our teams are now in 4th place in their divisions. The final match at Erith scheduled for 20 July had to be cancelled and at this point it is not clear whether it will be re-scheduled. If it is Tony Weston with liaise with you during my absence on holiday. Thanks to everyone who has supported the team through this season. I hope you have enjoyed your involvement with the Invicta Vets and will spread the word to others so that we can be more competitive next season. (John Gilbert)
