Southern Men’s League - Div 4E – Erith – 16th May

We were heavily handicapped with only 4 Invicta athletes representing the club. When we immediately concede so many points by contesting so few events we are never in a position to compete for a high position, let alone promotion from a Division comprising only 7 teams!!! What a sad state of affairs for a club which considers itself to be among the best in the area and which has an established reputation earned by success in the past and the present in a range of disciplines. Why are our male athletes (youths, juniors, seniors and vets) so reluctant to take part in the excellent friendly competition that this league provides? The 4 who made the effort to get to the match did themselves and the club proud to finish 5th. Tom Purnell came 2nd in the A string 800m (2.09.2) while Mark Wilkins recorded 17.12.4 to finish 3rd in the 5k. Aaron Murray had a “day to remember” achieving 3 new PB`s in his throws specialities-Shot -2nd in the A string with 11.26m (over 11m with the 7.26kg weight for the 1st time with 2 other throws also exceeding this distance) Discus - also 2nd in the A string and 1st time over 30 metres (31.18m) and 3rd in the A Javelin (29.28m). Aaron also won the B Hammer (26.06m) as well as collecting points in the A string LJ(3.42m) and TJ(7.44m). Team Manager John Gilbert supported Aaron’s tremendous achievements with 3rd in the A Hammer (28.10m), B Javelin (26.12m) and B Shot (7.73m), and 2nd in the B Discus (23.28m). John also contested the B events in the LJ (2.80m), HJ (1.00m) and TJ (6.14m). There are 3 more fixtures - the next this coming Saturday 6th June at Norman Park, Bromley. There is still time to pull ourselves higher up the Division and do ourselves some justice-even though promotion is obviously beyond our reach this season. We just need more competitors. Regardless of how good or bad you may consider yourself to be if you at least compete you will earn points for the team. The list to “sign-up” for the match has been up on the notice board at the club for some weeks. If you still haven’t committed yourself please do so. I’ll be at the club this Thurs evening so talk to me if you need transport/travel directions etc, otherwise phone me or e-mail. John Gilbert 01843 862520/ johnandclairegilbert@hotmail.com
