Kent League - Vets (Match 2)  -   SUTCLIFFE PARK  Friday  6 May 2011

Report from Team Manager John Gilbert

The 4 IEK men athletes who made the 2nd match of the Kent Vets League at Sutcliffe Park all competed well.

Robert Whittaker, an IEK club member some 20 years ago, made a return to competition now he has reached his half century!! Robert made an immediate impact winning the 35+ 3,000m “A” race in 10:47.0.

To demonstrate he has the speed to complement his stamina, Robert then came 3rd in the 35+ “B” 400m in 65.8. A very impressive come-back Robert!!

Another recent newcomer to the club is Mark Dawson whose enthusiasm and ability is already very evident. Mark competed in T&F in his teens but in recent years has mainly done road running.  As a specialist PE

teacher for many years before progressing to his present position as Head teacher at a junior school, his all round fitness is very impressive. Mark collected valuable points in the 35+ events - 400m “A” (62.8) TJ 2nd (7-68m) & hammer 4th (13.82m) which he had never tried before!!

Mark is awaiting clearance to compete 1st claim for Invicta and will then be eligible for our SML team. He will be a very welcome addition ASAP!!

Richard Hudson continues to be the most regular member of our squad and again his willingness to do almost any event gained lots of points for us. In his age group 50+ events he came 4th in the 400m (73.3) 3rd in the 3,000m (14:54.9) and 2nd in the TJ with 5-98m.

Team manager John Gilbert contested the 60+ 400m (5th 91.2) & TJ (4th 5-79m). He was then very relieved to return to throwing even though it was in the 50+ hammer where he managed 2nd with 28-90m.

Sadly none of our women were able to make this match.

After 2 fixtures the men`s team are 2nd in their division. If this could be maintained we would gain promotion (whisper it very quietly!!).

The women are 4th. If only we could get a bigger turn-out at every match - the perennial lament of a team manager!!
