Southern League MEN - Match 2  (Brighton)    Saturday 4 June 2011

  • Paul & Lee Rogers do 6 individual events each

  • Dan Langridge beats Team Manager (John Gilbert) in Shot

  • Non-scoring competitors in EVERY event on timetable - except sprint hurdles

In a 4-club match, brothers Paul Rogers & Lee Rogers did the same 6 events as each other - Lee as "A" string in all but the 110sprint hurdles, where Paul was a full second faster than brother Lee

Both ran for all the distance events from 1500m to 5,000m plus 3,000m s/chase, resulting in each running for a total of more than 41minutes ie. total between them 82 mins for the 3 events.

Against the might of both Herne Hill Harriers and Hastings AC Tom Purnell and Barry Hopkins both doubled in 400m and 800m, while Ben Burton (u20) did 100m and the Long before joining Team Manager John Gilbert (vet-65) in both Javelin and Triple Jump

Jacob Burton (u20) contested the B string 100 and Long Jump with brother Ben, then doubled up with Dan Langridge (also u20) for 200m - Jacob finally joined Team Manager John Gilbert to throw Discus while Dan joined the ubiquitous Team Manager for the Shot Put

Team Manager's Report   SML - Div2 - Brighton - 4thJune 2011

The “magnificent 8” made the journey to Brighton for the 2nd match o f the season accompanied by our stalwart official Gilien Davison, Mr and Mrs Burton and Hannah Biddiss - whose main role is to organize the busy afternoon schedule of the Burton and Rogers brothers!! Thanks to the efforts of the whole team, particularly the pair of brothers, we were able to cover all events except the PV and finished a comfortable 3rd among the 4 competing teams.

In the “A” events Ben Burton placed 2nd in the LJ-5-84m and 3rd in the TJ-11-90m, 100m-12.0 and Jav-34-56m and contested  the 4x400m where our team finished 3rd. In the “A” events Jacob came 2nd in the Dis-26-69m and 3rd in the 200m-24.3  while in the “B” strings he placed 2nd in the LJ-5-46m and 100m-12.1 before also running in the 4x400. The versatility of these two talented young multi-eventers is evident in their results on the track and in the jumps and throws. As u-20s SML rules restrict them to 5 events. But for this they would undoubtedly have contested even more and achieved equally impressive results.

The Rogers brothers are seniors and therefore not limited in the number of events they can contest and during the past year that they have competed for Invicta it has become very clear that they pride themselves on doing as many events as they can and seeing which of them can achieve the highest aggregate points score. Lets just check!! In the “A” strings Lee came 3rd in the 1500m-5-00.6, 5k-20-34.2 and 3k steeplechase-15-49.7 and 4th in the 400mH-81.7 and HJ-1-0m as well as placing 2nd in the “B” 110mH-22.0, an individual tally of 11points as well as contributing to the 4x400!! In the “B” strings Paul placed 3rd in the 1500m-5-58.1, 5k-22-48.9, steeplechase-15-49.7,HJ-1-0m and 400mH-71.6 and 4th in the Ham-11-91m in addition to 3rd in the “A”  110mH-21.0 – overall 13 points-oh yes-plus both relays!!!

On the track Tom Purnell and newcomer Barry Hopkins gathered more valuable points. Tom placed 3rd in the “A” 800m-2-10.4, 4th in the 400m-57.0 and ran in the relays. Barry finished 3rd in both the “B” 800m-2-27.9 and the 400m-60.5 and also contributed to the relays.

U-20 Daniel Langridge threw a PB in the shot gaining 2nd in the “A” event-8-80m and ran to 3rd in the “B” 200m-26.3 before joining the relay squads. John Gilbert placed 3rd in the “A” Ham-23-62m and in the “B” events was 2nd in the shot-7-47m, Dis-21-25m and TJ-6-36m plus 3rd in the Jav-22.27m. Possibly the outstanding action by an Invicta athlete during the match was that of Paul Rogers when he volunteered to take John`s place in the 4x100m relay-probably on the basis that the team wanted to get back home at a reasonable hour that evening!!

Our next match is Sat 9th July at Horsham. The “sign-up” sheet will be on the notice board next week. It would be very nice to see LOTS of new names on it!!
