McCain Inter-Counties Cross Country, Birmingham – 9th March 2013

Thirteen IEK athletes were selected to run for Kent in these races which incorporated the McCain World Cross Trials.

Rebecca Weston, Alex Clay and Bobby Clay raced in Birmingham in the McCains Under 20's Intercounties World Cross Country Trails. Alex and Bobby who are still both under 17 age group moved up an age group to try to qualify. Bobby is still only 15 years of age, so the race was all about gaining experience, with nothing to lose. The three girls represented Kent along with their team mate Nicola Wilson.

It was an exciting race with the three girls all starting and running with the leading pack. But early in the race Emelia Gorecka (7 times Champion at this race) and Bobby Clay, broke from the pack and got a good lead away from the others. Despite the huge age and size difference, Bobby raced step for step with Emelia for the majority of the race before Emelia finally managed to shake off the 15 year old.

The Final results being Emelia Gorecka 1st (19.41 ) Bobby Clay 2nd (20.07) Rebecca Weston 5th (20.32) and Alex Clay 6th (20.37) and Nicola Wilkinson 35th (22.43). Kent took the Team Gold.

Bobby Clay, Rebecca Weston and Alex Clay have all made selection and will be representing GB in the World Cross Country Championships in Poland on the 24th March, in the under 20's age group, three athletes all from Canterbury IEK out of a team of 6.

In the under-17 women, Amy Old came 38th, Lilly Coward 52nd, and Emily Mckane 66th. In the under-15 girls, Anna Weston was 193rd, and Abigail Fox 240th; and Ella Fox came 119th in the under-13 girls, meaning that Invicta represented Kent in all female age groups except the seniors.

For the under-17 men, Jack Goss came 42nd and Barney Howard 209th. Luke Dawson was 79th in the under-20s, and Donald Carter in the seniors.
