SAL-Div2 SE-Match 4-Kingston-14/7/12

On 14/7 an Invicta team of 10 men and 3 women journeyed to Kingston for the 4th fixture of the season. The rain threatened all afternoon but held off as our athletes`  produced some good results and competed well.

Elliott Burton-u17-made his first appearance for the team and finished 3rd in the “A” 100m-12.1. As always, Lee Rogers contested numerous events and demonstrated his ability over a wide range of distances-“A” events-200m-4th-27.0, 400m-3rd-57.4, 3k-3rd-14-07.8, 110mH-3rd-22.9, 3kSC-2nd-15-19.0 and the “B” 400mH-2nd-73.2!! Barry Hopkins placed 3rd in both the “B” 400m-61.5 and “A” 800m-2-18.8. Tom Purnell excelled in the “A” 1500m winning in 4-23.3. Andy Cope made a welcome return to the team and ran to 2nd in the “B” 1500-4-42.5. Newcomer Chris Harvey demonstrated how useful  his  regular appearances for the team could be when in the “B” events he placed 2nd in both the 800m-2-31.7 and the Jav-22-97.

Ben and Jacob Burton made their usual substantial contribution to the teams` efforts  for what could be the last time before they relocate in the autumn to study at Hallam University in Sheffield. In the “A” strings Jacob placed 4th in a very high-class LJ-5-96 and 3rd in the 400mH-63.8. Ben improved his PB in the Dis 4 times  finishing 2nd-28-78. Both young men contested the relays where our squads were 3rd  in the 4x100m-53.8 and 4th in the 4x400m-4-20.8. Thank you Ben and Jacob (and Carol and Simon) for all you have put into Invicta during your time with us. We will follow your future progress, and undoubted success, with great interest...and pride.

Nick Farnell is enjoying competing in, what for him, are new throwing events and placed 3rd in the “A” shot-7-77 and 2nd in the “B” Ham-18-89 before his speciality event –the Jav-where he finished  2nd in the “A” and was again over 40m-41-23. John Gilbert managed 2nd place in the “A” ham-22-55 and “B” shot-7-62 and Dis-21-29.

For the women Sharon Hawkins was outstanding winning both the “B” 400m-73.2 and the “A” 3k-11-11.5 and placing 2nd in the “A” 1500m-5-28.3 and 3rd in the “A” 800m-2-38.6!! Sharon..where do you get the energy from??  Hannah Biddis had a busy afternoon. In the “A” track events she placed 2nd in the 100m-13.4 and 200m-27.5, 3rd in the 400mH-78.5 and won the flat 400m-61.8 before moving to the field for 2nd in the “B” Dis-13-56 and 3rd in the “A” Jav-15-61. It was also very pleasing to have Beverley Newing with us again following her return from university. Bev was 3rd in both the “B” 100m-14.7 and 200m-31.8 and in the “A” events was again 3rd in both  the shot-6-77 and DIs-16-56 and 4th in the LJ-4-13.

We are now at the lower end of our division but this was always to be expected given the strength of the opposition. There are plans to create more divisions next season and I would anticipate that among teams at our level we will be more competitive . One thing is for certain-we will enjoy ourselves!!

Our final match of this season is at our home Canterbury  track on Sat 1st Sept. This is an opportunity for as many Invicta youths, juniors, seniors  (and Vets)  as possible to compete for the team. Priority will be given to our loyal regulars but I know they will welcome help!! The “sign-up” sheet will be on the club house board shortly.

We will also need all our officials  and judges and helpers on the day. Please liaise with Sharon Hawkins and Barry Hopkins as I will be away from 6-31/8 (lucky me””). But I will be back for 1/9-wouldn`t miss it for the world!!

See you there.

Yours in Sport- John Gilbert
