WATFORD OPEN 1ST MAY 2013

A WONDERFUL NIGHT OF ATHLETICS IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITIONS…

10 athletes made a worthwhile trip to Watford, 9 coming home with new personal best times…all running 1500m.

First up Douglas Noel set of in the pack holding a good pace and finishing very strongly in the final lap in a new pb of 5.09, a huge 7 sec faster!

Next up four young ladies Emily Bond, Abbie Fox, Sister Ella and Jessica Carley. This was a really close race with all 13 competitors fighting it out all with the girls getting involved in the battle. Emily crossing the line in 4th and just missed her sub five target by

0.30 of a second, never the less an outstanding performance and a new pb. Finishing in some style and fighting very hard for her new pb Abbie Fox must have surely turned the corner in terms of her fitness and form, really determined and a fine return to racing in 5.02.

Ella Fox is a fine athlete and as I think I may have stated before when she races she means business, really involved in the race from start to finish saw her home in a new pb of 5.04, much more to come from this young lady I am certain of that.

Jessica Carley is a brave athlete who wears her heart on her sleeve.

She got slightly boxed early doors which saw her at the tail end of the field, with such a competitive race going on in front of her she just couldn’t get round the pack to get involved. As a consequence she missed her pb but Jessica is strong and determined all we now need to do is get her tactics right and she will certainly be right up with her peers, as she is in training!

NOTE TO ALL ATHLETES READING THIS…

ALL BAR JESSE…GOT NEW PBs….WHY?

ANSWER BECAUSE THEY ALL GOT INVOLVED WITH A RACE

THAT RACING LEFT THEM NOT THINKING ABOUT TIMES BUT BEATING THE OPOSITION….THE BY PRODUCT OF RACING???

PERSONAL BESTS!!!!  A LESSON FOR YOU ALL…

Next up a charming young man in the shape of his life Bobby Harrup, not his favoured distance I know, he entered a time of 4.40 with some doubt in his mind I’m sure, but he had nothing to fear seeing his training sessions. Again he got involved with the race, an interesting battle with two other athletes saw him finally kick free of them and come home in a flying 4.41. All bodes well for his favoured 800m later in the season.

Another Bobby next this time Bobby Clay, I have no idea what the 12 guys standing on the line towering over Bobby must be thinking when they lined up next to her in this heat. I smile to myself as I’m sure they think she must be in the wrong race?

Well actually she was!!! As she dismissed them all at about 1000m

And totally terrorised them, one brave chap did try to make it back to her but that just motivated her to kick again, a fine time of 4.23, ranks her No1 in the UK (of course) and definitely she should have been in the next heat, which featured another fine athlete Dylan Rigby.

Dylan has quietly getting on with business in only his second season. Some fine performances so far this track season. There was a

Raised eyebrow when Peter Mullervy suggested he put his expected performance down as 4.18, his previous best being 4.45, so with breath held as he lined up, we watched him become totally engaged in racing the other 14 athletes. It was a very close race again and a fine finish and time of 4.20, justified Peters belief in him.

Penultimate athlete for us was Jack Goss, I’ve waxed lyrical already about this young man and surely he has it all. Great attitude and belief, he steps on that line daring people to take him on! Probably for me the race of the evening, always in the top four swapping places and finally with such determination winning in 4.04.73  a massive 7 sec faster than he has ever run 1500m before, athlete of the year competition will be very interesting in December!

Lastly a fine athlete who hasn’t raced on the track for two years!!

But with such talent that is surely now behind him, Luke Dawson has power, speed and a great attitude to boot, he again was totally involved in the race coming home in a new pb of 4.04.92.

With more track racing in a very short space of time ,Luke will be sub 4 at this distance and I for one cant wait to see it, well done all!!!

We spectators loved every minute!!!!
