The weather was dreadful with heavy rain at times but it couldn`t dampen the enthusiasm of the men's team who excelled at their home track and finished the evening in joint 1st place with Paddock Wood. Terry Hawkins (M45) won the “A” 35+ 200m by 0.1 of a second (26.8) and then in the field was victorious in both the 35+ shot (9.58) and jav (23.85) before anchoring the 4x100m relay to 2nd place (58.6). Terry was also due to compete in the 35+ HJ but this event was cancelled because of the rain. This also meant that newcomer to the team Steve Williams (M50) couldn`t start his progression from a very active Invicta coach to vets team competitor in the HJ, but Steve made up for this disappointment (it was a “disappointment” wasn`t it Steve??) by winning his age group shot (7.60). Excellent start Steve!! Martin Kelk (M45) contested the 35+1500m A where he placed 5th  (4-52.1) and also contributed to the relay squad. Steve Burt (M40) made a welcome return to competition to just win the 35+ “B” 200m (28.1) and then also ran the relay. Michael Gallyer-Barnett  made his contribution to the cause in the 35+ 1500m B where he finished 3rd (5-41.5).

Rob Whittaker (M50) ran an outstanding 1500m and won by nearly 40 secs (5-00.7) and was also in the relay. Richard Hudson (M50) was, for once, not called on to contest all the usual unfilled places in the team because of low numbers, so after scoring points for the team by placing 4th in the 200m (33.4) and running in the relay
he didn`t want to go home feeling under used and “guested” in the 1500m (6-32.0)!! Team manager John Gilbert (M70) managed 2nd place in the 50+ jav (20.16) and won the 60+ shot (7.94).

Invicta`s men are now in 2nd place in the division. With strong turn-outs at all future meetings promotion could be a real possibility. Our next match is on Friday 30/5 at Bromley. The timetable of events is on the notice board as is the “sign-up” sheet. Please do support the team. And a special plea for our vet women to get involved.

A sincere thank you to all the Invicta members and families who helped host this match and contributed to a successful evening. The visiting teams all went home having had a good time.
