Anna and John are Kent track champions 2016

Anna Weston stormed to an eye-catching victory in the u20 Kent 3,000m track championship at Dartford on Wednesday 22 June then John Wilkins set an IEK age group record in the track 10,000m.

After a low key cross-country season during which she reverted to training predominantly on grass, Anna stuck to her race strategy of staying behind her rivals for the first kilometre then she upped the pace in the middle kilometre to open a significant gap over her main rivals from Kent's two leading clubs, Lucy Thompson of Tonbridge and Joanna Clowes of Blackheath Bromley.

In her final kilometre, Anna looked every inch a county champion as she closed the race 100m ahead of her nearest rival to clinch her first individual County gold medal since starting middle-distance running with Invicta East Kent as an 11 year-old.
Her fast time of 10.38.70 is among the top 5 times in the last 10 years of this event and Anna was only 8 seconds behind Kent Senior Women's champion Isabel Bradley of Kent AC.

Anna has been ever-present in Invicta East Kent's middle-distance track and cross-country teams which, in their young days earned them the nickname of Red Sparrows and her gold medal adds to the numerous team gold medals and individual silver and bronze medals collected over the years and is just reward for a young athlete who has regularly represented both club and county at national level in club events as well as schools events.

On 22 June, Dartford was also the venue for the County 10,000m track championships which featured IEK’s lone representative John Wilkins who, in his first recorded track 10,000m, set an IEK age group best when winning the Men’s vet-60 Kent title in 49mins 34.95 secs.

John has long distance road running pedigree with a Marathon best of 2hrs 23.44 in 1985, a Half Marathon best of 70mins 17 secs in 1977 and a 10 mile Road best of 58mins 22 secs in 2001. His 10-mile best was as a vet-45 when he won the over-40s Kent 10 Mile Road Championship when it was staged in our own Canterbury 10 mile Road race.

Before this season’s vet-60 10,000m track race at Dartford, John’s only two other track outings in the last 10 years are his shortest and, in both he was a vet-55 – in 2006 John was 3rd in Kent 5,000m track Championship in 17mins 59.71 and in 2009 John won our IEK Club 5,000m Vet-55 championship on our home track at Canterbury in 19mins 23.6 secs.
