Young IEK storm Belgian National Lotto cross-country in Dour

Sixteen young athletes crossed the Channel by Shuttle for a successful series of races with French and Belgian athletes, [img:376l]coming away with 3 medals and 7 top 10 placings despite racing unfamiliar distances, under European age group rules. Anna Weston set the tone with super sprint finish for a brilliant bronze in the race for those born in 1998, Lilly Coward made 7th in the race for those born in 1996. In the 1994/5 age group, Rebecca Weston stormed round the short 2,000m race for a fine silver against the Belgian No. 1 who has not been raced that close in two seasons, while Jack Balsdon & Eddie Burton were 9th & 16th over 3.5km. Eight athletes (4 male and 4 female) took on the best Belgians in 1992/93 races - the girls at 3km (compared to Hillingdon's 5km) and the boys at 4.5km - Emily Hosker Thornhill (9) and Jason Prickett (4) making the top 10, jason with a real 800m sprint finish. Kieran Reilly got the better of James Reilly (no relation) despite James's hitherto unknown sprint finish, while Rachel Burton's fitness saw her get the better of Leah Samarsinghe. Beth Carter split the two best Belgian u-20s over the short 4.5km race and Josh Freemont ran out of counting beads in the 5 lap race for those born in 1990/91, ie 18 year-olds.
