Southern Men’s League - Match 2 - Sutton - Div 4E

In the 2nd meeting of this season's Southern Men’s League IEK fielded a stronger team than in the 1st match and consequently were able to lead the competition throughout the afternoon and eventually achieve a clear victory by some 20 points. The momentum was established in the 1st event- the shot-where Aaron Murray surpassed with his every throw the distance recorded by the 2nd place athlete-his best registering 11.94 mtrs-just short of his personal best set at the previous match. In the “B” string newcomer to the club David Glendower was competing in the SML for the 1st time and did well to finish in 3rd-7.30mtrs. Aaron contested all the other throwing events winning the “B” hammer-25.52 mtrs, finishing 6th in the “A” javelin-25.97mtrs and 3rd in the “A” discus-28.61mtrs. Team manager John Gilbert partnered Aaron in these events and placed 2nd in the “A” hammer-26.77mtrs and 3rd in both the “B” javelin-25.52mtrs and discus-22.20mtrs. A huge contribution to the success of the team was also made by u17 Joe Marchant-making his debut in the men’s league- and u20 junior Daniel Langridge. The pair achieved victories in the 800mtrs-Joe in the “A”-2-15.3- and Daniel in the “B”-2-34.6. In the 400mtrs Daniel won again in the “B” race-61.3sec-with Joe 2nd in the “A”-59.2sec. Daniel also contested the 100mtrs “A” race placing 3rd-13.1sec. Both young men also recorded 1mtr in the High Jump and collected valuable point with Joe 5th in the “A” and Daniel 3rd in the “B”. Mark Wilkins also contributed to the points haul by winning both the “A” 5k -16.22.1-and the 1500mtrs-4.44.8- a remarkable achievement considering that he had only an hour’s recovery between these events. Perhaps the most significant impact on the team’s performance was made by brothers Lee and Paul Rogers who had only joined the club days earlier. Both are experienced athletes who specialize in the hurdles events, where Invicta have not had competitors for some years now. The pair won both hurdles races-the 110mtrs-Lee “A” -21.1sec-Paul-“B”-21.3-and the 400mtrs-Lee “A”-66.7sec- Paul-“B”-68.8sec. They also contested the 200mtrs with Lee finishing 3rd in the “A”-26.2sec- and Paul in the same position in the ”B”-26.8sec. Moving to the Long Jump Paul placed 5th in the “A”-4.45mtrs- with Lee in the same position in the “B”-3.58mtrs. Lee still found the energy to finish 3rd in the “B” 100mtrs -12.7sec and 2nd in the “B” 1500mtrs-6-25.8. The brothers then combined with Daniel, Joe and Mark to place 2nd in the 4x100mtrs relay-58.8- and win the 4x400mtrs -4-05.9. The best example of willingness to do whatever was required to gain points came in the Triple Jump where Aaron Murray and David Glendower-two specialist throwers-respectively recorded “A”-7.88mtrs and “B”-7.31mtrs. This is the first time in many seasons that Invicta have won a SML match and demonstrates how competitive the club is when able to cover a wide range of events. We still particularly need pole vaulters and to know that our athletes will make themselves available for all the matches. It would be very nice if winning became a habit!! Our next fixture in on Sat 5th June at Luton. Details are on the club house notice board. Please.......please (especially you Juniors) do support the team.
