[img:669l]Max Farnell [LEFT] clinched a fine silver in the javelin at the National Prep Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham where he was the first u-13 IEK member to clear 30 metres, thus breaking the IEK u-13 club record of 29.18m set by Tim Kitney in 1992. In a competiton of three attempts, and the top 6 having a 4th and final throw, Max twice went over 30 metres : he lay 4th at the end of the opening round, leapt up to 2nd with his best throw of 30.54m and, his 4th and final attempt was only 1 cm short of his round 2 best effort. Max's new mark is a National Grade 2 standard and by improving his previous Grade 3 personal best by almost 3 meters, he moves up from 47th to 23rd in this season's National Power-of-10 National rankings. At the same meeting, the benefit of training in Carlo Monticolombi's sprint squad showed when Max improved his 200m time (29.1) to a Grade 3 time of 28.86
