Ben Burton smashes Michael Adlam's 25 year-old Octathlon record

27 June was a Red-letter day for Ben Burton (RIGHT)[img:666r] when he was 2nd Kent man and 6th overall in the Octathlon at the Regional Schools Combined events at Ashford with an new IEK record. Over the weekend, Ben mustered 5 pbs (shot, javelin, 100 hdles, high jump and Discus) to amass 4162 points (National Grade 2) which smashes by 100 points the u-17 club record set way back in 1985 by Michael Adlam, one of our best ever multi-eventers. To match Ben's 100point improvement of Adlam's record, an u-17 male runner would have to record 49.9secs to erase the u-17 record of 51.0 for 400m, or, an u-20 female would have to reduce the 800m record of 2min 15.6secs to 2min 13.0 secs. Ben's Discus pb of 30.15m is a particular revelation because only 4 days earlier he was 3rd in our internal club championships with a best of 19.43m, behind 2010 club champion brother Jacob as well as Sam Hudson. Ben's Ashford Octathlon puts him in the top 10 of the country's 2010 rankings and he is now selected to represent Kent Schools at the English Schools National Octathlon in September
