Tonbridge Open

TOM PURNELL STAR OF THE SHOW AT TONBRIDGE OPEN

On a rather inclement day not ideal for good performance, our athletes performed well at the Tonbridge Open on 9th April.

The star of the show was Tom Purnell, a familiar figure around the Club! Tom set a new personal best in the 5000m, improving his time by nearly 15 seconds. His time now stands at 16mins48.88secs. Peter Mullervy, his coach at IEK, commented, “He (Tom) followed the coaches schedule to the letter allowing for slowing due to tiredness, but became inspired when he realised the dream of breaking 17 minutes was about to become reality, so he sprinted the last 600 m to take off a further twelve seconds! Now one season’s target achieved he can turn his attention to the 800!” Tom commented that “the conditions weren’t great, but I am amazed at my time. To win the race was a bonus as well.”

Other great performances were made by Jack Goss and Alex Clay in the mile and Kieran Reilly in the 600m. Peter Mullervy, again their coaches comments, “I was very pleased with all their performances! New Invicta member, Jack Goss, and Alex Clay ran 1 mile times which suggest new 1500 pbs will be a formality! Kieran Reilly set a new pb for 600 whilst being narrowly defeated by last year’s English schools 800m champ. Beth Burnett also ran a solid mile despite being in the middle of some heavy preparation for exams.”

No Open would be complete with mentioning the World Champion in our midst. Bobby Clay took part in the mile setting a new personal best time of 4mins56.11secs, nearly 3 seconds quicker than her previous mark. It looks as though Bobby is going to have another great season.

The ever present Jacob and Ben Burton mixed several events (150m, Long Jump and Discus), but the cold weather was not conducive to good performances in the power events. However they both showed they are on track for even bigger points scores in the decathlon this season.

Holly Fielder also put in strong performance in the 150m, setting a new personal best time of 20.67secs, knocking 1.3 secs off her previous mark. Holly also ran in the 600m, producing a solid 1:48.52. To add a trio to her events Holly also set a big personal best in the Long Jump adding an amazing 15cm to her previous best set at Crystal Palace on 1st April. Her personal best now stands at a distance of 4.59m.

Rhiannon Wallwork also competed in 3 events, setting a new personal best in the process at 150m. Her time now stands at 20.03secs. Rhiannon also contested the 75m hurdles (14.50secs) and the High Jump (1.35m).
